This isn't a political issue, it's a maths problem. If Ziggy does not pay income tax, national insurance and VAT then the tax burden for everyone else has to increase. If you want lower tax then make sure everyone pays their way:

We used a decorator recently who half way through the job had a heart attack. His doctors told him he had to take months off work but a few weeks later he felt well enough to complete our job (we weren't hassling him in any way & were prepared to wait longer!) however what was left to do was thankfully quite light work & he was able to do it by taking it easy. However, the reason he was desperate to return to work was that he couldn't survive on what little he was getting in incapacity, so I had no qualms about paying him cash, knowing he wasn't going to declare it.
  • Of course she should use him. She is getting value for money while if he wants to take the risk of avoiding the IR then its up to him. If the worse thing that he does is avoid paying tax where possible then he's no worse than the rich who employ accountants to do this for them or the big corporations who pay little if any corporation tax. For all anyone knows the decorator may not pay tax because morally he objects to his money being spent on Trident, Nuclear Power et al.

Self employed people don't have an option to not pay tax: it's the law.

If you don't like the political stance of the present government then I suggest make your protest at the ballot box, not on your self assessment tax return!

Why did Ziggy tell her that he was evading tax? I can see how people are tempted by illegal traders but what you have to remember is that if there is a problem with the work, you have no guarantee as you knew that he was working `off the books.:rotfl:`
  • I can't believe so many people think it is OK to not pay tax or use the services of someone who doesn't either.
I work for the NHS and am amazed everyday about the number of people who think it is their given right to totally free healthcare, housing and benefit even if they've just stepped off an aeroplane! It's the tax payer that pays for all this, if you don'y pay tax and National Insurance you are not entitled to the benefits it affords.

    Honest people unite!
  • People say that his dishonesty about tax means that there is no guarantee on the quality of work. However, the fact that he has admitted to dodging tax means he HAS to do a good job, otherwise the customer is more likely to ring that tax evasion hot line.

She should not use Ziggy for the simple reason that if/when something goes wrong Ziggy is under no pressure to come back and fix it. He could just walk away and say "Sorry luv, don't kow what you're talking about". Chanelle has no proof that he did the work so can't go to anyone to complain.

This is a case where paying more is a reasonable thing to do.

Well I certainly wouldn't use Ziggy but I wouldn't report him either. I'd just choose the one I preferred from the other two who quoted or get a third quote from someone else.
  • Let he who has never had selective honesty about their tax affairs cast the first stone.
