Any opinion on some work boots

I wondered if anyone could give me some advice on some defective work boots.
I got the boots 8 months ago but until recently I did not wear them much as they were not suitable for the conditions I was working in a lot. Recently I discovered large splits appearing in the soles of both boots and tried contacting the seller but no luck, then contacted a company that is either the UK distributors of the brand or manufacturer, not sure which, and all I got back off them is that there is only a 6 month warranty and that is only with the retailer.
The boots are hardly showing any signs of wear so I was doing a bit of reading and it seems to me that the boots do not fit the requirements of either 'of satisfactory quality' or 'fit for purpose'.
So wondered if it was worth trying to take this further.

Have you contacted the company you bought the boots from as your rights lie with them?

Your rights, however, may be limited as the fact that these are workboots would imply that you made the purchase as a business transaction rather than as a private individual.

The retailer can require proof that, as you've had them more than 6 months the boots were ingerently faulty.

As you state the boots have little signs of use apart from the splits you should be ok getting a report on that. However the seller has the right to require you to get that report.

Were the boots worn in oily/greasy conditions?

Prolonged oil and grease contact will cause some soles to split/disintegrate, you can get work boots with soles rated for wear in oily conditions

Tried contacting retailer several times but think they have gone out of business or something as phone doesn't work and no answer to emails.

It was a private purchase, nothing to do with any business.

They have not been used in oily type environments but the soles are supposed to be resistant to such stuff.

Have also tried contacting our local trading standards but got a recorded message basically saying that they do not want anything to do with individual consumer issues.
