'Royal Mail signed for' service

Options
Has anyone used the 'Royal Mail signed for' service and the post office can't find anyone in long enough to deliver to? Do they try again in the evening, or early morning. What happens if the recipient is on holiday? Do they try a week later?

I'm wondering if I should sent a normal letter as well, so at least it will be posted through the letterbox.

    My postie either drops them through letterbox if small enough and signs it himself or re-attempts delivery a day later, I have had a card through before and asking about collecting it from a sorting office or rearranging delivery again.

    I didn't know the Postie could sign it himself. I thought it had to be delivered to the person it was addressed to with a signature from someone who lives in the dwelling at least.

    Mine is just chilled out like me and it does not bother me at all, I have said before I am not fussed what happens as long as my post arrives. I think by the rules in place it needs to be the addressee signing it but I won't lose any sleep.

    I wouldn't be happy with that at all, my postie used to do that until a parcel went missing and when I claimed against the company they said that as they had a signature there was nothing I could do as it proved that it had been delivered to my address :(

    Depends on which postman delivers it (we never have the same one all of the time) but we've had:

    1) Through the letterbox, no signature requested (even when we are at home) - when checking tracking number online there is no signature at all, not even the postman's;

    2) Delivered to a neighbour;

    3) Returned to delivery office with note through the door telling us to collect/re-arrange delivery.
  • if its signed for, its gets taken back to the local sorting office and a note put through the door telling you where you're parcel is

    It was posted on 04/01/16 and is 'being progressed through our network for delivery.' so I assume that means they have unsuccessfully tried to deliver it, at least once.

    The reason for the signed for letter, is that I'm claiming off a local tradesman for shoddy work. If he discovers what the letter is he will be reluctant to collect it. He's a slippery customer. Often claims he's ill, or on holiday which he might well be considering the margin he must take.

    I intend to send an email and conventional letter as well, but not before he's had an opportunity to see the signed for letter. I need enough evidence I have provided him with sufficient opportunity to pay up before taking him to the small claims court.

    usually when it says progressed through our network, there is usually a click for more detailed tracking info which will show if delivery attempts have been made. If not I would contact RM and ask for detailed info.

    If you did 2nd class signed for it can take 3 days so may not even be delivered til today if you posted on the 4th.

    It was 1st class.

    The signed for option specifically states it omits detailed tracking info (and indeed there isn't if you click), you have to pay more for that. I'm sure it would say, called no answer, slip posted through to call at office, end of story.

    Unless they are prepared to call in the early morning and evening there's a fair chance of there being no answer anyway.

    From my experience 'being progressed through our network for delivery' for more than a week, means they delivered the item but never got a signature.

    I have also seen that it will sometimes state when a delivery was made and that a 'something for you' card was left, to let them know it can be collected or arrange a re-delivery.
