Engagement ring has broken!

Hi all,
I bought my partner her engagement ring 2 years ago. We were out the other night and notice her diamond had fallen out (and obviously is now lost! It was pretty small! :)). The ring's setting looks to have come loose.
Where do I stand with getting a refund? I would expect a ring to last more than 2 years! I have the receipt. Can I take it back?
Thanks

After two years you stand very little chance of a refund and even if you got one it probably wouldn't be a full refund as you've had two years use from it.

The first thing to do is speak to the jeweller you bought it from, however after this length of time they may not want to do anything for you and at this stage you can't force them to so be very nice and polite when you speak to them.

They may just look at it and agree it's faulty and put it right or more likely they will want you to prove that it is a manufacturer defect and not user damage or wear and tear. They chances are it has taken a knock or got caught on something as it has been fine for two years, to suddenly come loose would be very unusual.

Did you take out any sort of warranty on the ring to cover accidents? Does your home contents insurance cover the ring?

Frankly were I to show up with stone & ring & receipt, I would merely hope they'd do a repair.

No stone? No hope. However, a lost stone can be replaced & fitted & that can cost a bucketload less than the original ring.

Rousing cheers for Manchester Minerals (on the edge of Stockport) who were able to match a marquise sapphire for me - with change from a fiver. Unlike the high street jewellers we bought it from who offered to replace & fit the stone for over £130. (No connection, just a Very happy customer.)

Thanks guys - youve confirmed my concerns. I shall check my home insurance policy, although theyll just increase my premium so its not worth it do you think?

If it was only a small diamond it would probably cost less than your insurance excess to replace it.

It would depend on how much the claim is for and who you insure with. I had to make my first ever insurance claim last year on a TV damaged while redecorating, £50 excess and just had renewal through and it's only £10 more than last year so really not complaining about that at all (and also a good recommendation for Endsleigh Insurance) Others have had bad experiences with premiums more than doubling after a claim.

Is this something I could phone/email my insurance company about to say "if I claim £200 how much will my premium go up next ?" ?
