I have heard that auto tune in ballymena are good for vag cars. I was planning to get my car remapped a couple of years ago and they were very good about responding to emails, questions etc - but in the end I changed the car instead and so have no direct experience of the remap.

I've a tuning box on our Insignia. Its 160BHP standard, and the tuning box takes it to around 190ish. My son has a tuning box on his BMW 120D and it takes it from 177BHP to around 210BHP.

Advantages to a tuning box are :-
    • Easily removed
    • Can be resold
    • Can be moved to another car / reprogrammed to another car
    • Because it can be removed it is undetectable for warranty purposes
    • Cheap

    Disadvantages :-
    • Wont extract the max power
    • Wont give you the most "fluent" power range

For comparison, if i got the Insignia mapped it would take it to around 206BHP

I've also had a couple of cars remapped - of note a BMW 535d to 350BHP

Never had any issues with either remapping or tuning boxes.

Any issues mapping an automatic car? Does it work the same or do the way the gears work make it difficult?

No issues at all. The 535d was an auto and it coped with it superbly.

Its an "easy" 25% power gain.

I've been using tuning boxes / remappings from 2002. Probably had 10-15 cars done over that time.

Does remapping a car not put more stress on the engine, wear and tear etc?

I.e. the OEM designed it to a certain spec for a reason ?

Insurance company might have something to say about power increases from mapping!

Possibly. A safe increase could make it a little bit more powerful and or fuel efficient yet make neglible difference to the engines life.
A bad owner will make a bigger difference.

Those that thrash the engine from cold and do not let it warm up properly before using larger throttle openings. Or those that see the oil change intervals as a guideline instead of a maximum.

Or thrash it to the red line at every set of lights etc...

Shouldnt really make a difference to the engine. A lot of car companies use the same basic engine for their entire range. Its just software that "limits" some models

CEON44 - not much useful, specific advice unless you post your car model, engine and age.
