I am starting to wonder if it is worth going in car because Virgin trains on Trust pilot have terrible reviews

DD is at Uni in the midlands and often gets Virgin or East Midlands trains to London, as do her Uni friends and has never experienced any issues. Also we have travelled up to see her and no problems or delays. DD does use BM more as cheaper. With reviews, I always consider that people are more likely to write reveiews if they had had a bad experience, than a good experience. You expect a train to get you from A to B as specified so are unlikely to write a review unless you get something above and beyond that IMO or have a bad experience.

British Midland have a 20% off sale so fares have gone down today to £8 each way on the date you want. I would recommend you travel by train as cheaper, quicker and less stressful. Although a longer journey on BM trains v Virgin trains you would be saving £20 and for that you could buy your snacks and drinks and any reading material for the train before you board and you wouldn't notice the difference in journey time or travel First class with free wifi for a similar price.

Sorry, I can not see any fares at £8 to London Euston.

I could get to London and back in my Polo on a full tank that would cost around £40

Virgin currently have a sale on so train fare would be the same or less and no worrying about parking (most London hotels don't include free parking some something to consider when costing hotels). I have lived in what is considered the outer reaches of London and near stations and in recent years almost all parking closeish to stations has become residents only or pay and display to deter those going to London for the day from hogging spots used by people living and working locally.

A lot of the info online about where you can park for free on the London outskirts is out of date so be careful !

For a daytrip and using trainline for 23/01

    Crewe 9.24 Euston 11.05
    Euston 16.46 Crewe 19.27
Two off peak singles come to thirty pounds (18 out 12 back)

Have to admit I'm intrigued what kind of meeting could be equally at 12 midnight as 12 noon though ! :D)

Sorry, it is London Midland not British Midland (have been looking at airfares so had BM on the mind). click on book online here red button. Choose the fares with 0 changes from Crewe to London Euston.

Coming back the £8 fare involves a change and it may be better to pay a couple of pounds more to get the direct train e.g. the £9.60 train at 4.46pm so £17.60 instead of £16 return fare.
    Journey 1
    £17.60
    Crewe to London Euston
    Depart: Sat, Jan 23rd, 06:01

    Return: Sat, Jan 23rd, 16:46
