It 5.30 in the morning and my dog has dirrhoea and sickness (came down to find she has been sick three times and had diarrhoea too) . She was also sick last night (all her days food) and then we know she was ok when dh went toilet at 4.30am but then I woke at 5pm and she wasn't in her bed so I came down and found her asleep downstairs near our back door in her downstairs bed (yes I know we spoil her with beds but it is to save bringing her bed downstairs every day.
Anyway, she is asleep and she was shaking a bit so I put a blanket on her and I've put the heating on for her but I really don't know what to do as I've only had her a year.......do I treat her like the kids when they have sickness I.e no food for six hours after they have finished being sick/ diarrhoea and then introduce bland food eg chicken & rice?
I do remember she ate something in the park on Saturday but I couldn't see what and it had gone down by the time I got to her.
She is only a little Jack Russell terrier so how do I know if she is dehydrated and at what stage does the vet need to become involved?

Get her to the vet asap! It might just be a stomach upset but it could also be something much more serious....Always try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!0

My jack Russell does this frequently after he has pinched food (he is a master thief even in his old age ). Sometimes we just keep an eye on him and he recovers in a couple of days sometimes it's a vet visit , depending if he is just off colour or like this weekend it's a vet visit , blood tests, anti biotics and a £220 bill !
Call the vets as soon as you can , just to be on the safe sideVuja De - the feeling you'll be here later0 -
Thank you your replies I will call the vets when they open this morning. Poor thing was sick again 40 mins ago0

V&D can be the symptoms of bugs, irritated stomachs, blockages, and so on. Without knowing what she scarfed down at the park, I think a vet visit is a wise call - it may have been toxic or it may have caused an obstruction, and time is of the essence with those kind of situations.
If they deem it an upset tum or a bug, then small, frequent, gentle meals (e.g. small bits of cooked chicken - don't worry about rice unless you're 100% sure she's OK with it) are advised over starving nowadays. And some slippery elm powder (Dorwest brand is good) will help settle the tum.0 -
Thank you all for your replies.....I'm glad to tell you that she is much better today. I have been feeding her little and often today and she has kept everything down and she is moving around much more than yesterday.
I rang the vets yesterday and told them her symptoms and they told me to wait 24 hours to see if she improved or if she got worse to bring her down to them. Apparently they have seen a lot of dogs over the past week in our area with the same thing so I assume it's a bug .
Anyway thank you all again0 -

I think you're panicking the OP unnecessarily. Keep on eye on the pet and try and ensure that they drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. I usually fast them for 24 hours and then introduce bland food.
