Sound Bar Best for under £150 for TV

The sound on our LG TV is not that good. It has been suggested that we purchase a sound bar which we are told for our purpose to improve the sound clarity that we should be able to buy one for just under £150, any suggestions please. The Yamaha YAS 105 for £149 has been mentioned. is that good advise?

  • I can't comment on that specific soundbar but my advice is to go somewhere we you can listen to them in person before choosing. It doesn't really matter what TV you have as the sound will be coming from the soundbar. Have a listen to a few in the price range you are looking at and see which you think sounds best. Check for one that has some control over the bass rather than just on/off which is the case with some of the cheaper 2.1 soundbars. Make sure the connection in to the soundbar works with your TV, an optical digital connection is almost certainly going to be better than analogue.

Personally I still prefer a proper AV Receiver with separate speakers but you won't pick one up for £150.

I purchased a yamaha soundbar for our office - think it was the YAS103 model. Good sound on it for the money. Gets 81% score on Which.

For under £150, I doubt there is much difference between them.

A sound bar will likely be an improvement over the TV speakers if there is a sub connected, probably not so much without.

Sound bars are kind of an odd product which I never thought would take off. They are usually not much better than TV speakers (same size restrictions) unless you pay a lot of money, and then you might as well get a proper surround system.

Your best bet is to listen to some, but be careful to look out for showroom trickery!
  • i am not sure if you have to purchase a sound bar the same brand as your tV. You will need to check whatever you buy is compatible, I understand Yamaha is a good brand as is Cantor which is a bit more expensive. many televisions that are not top of the range suffer from poor sound reproduction and for this reason we are in the process of investigating the benefits of soundbars. I am told you do not need to spend a fortune and can get one that will improve the sound for about £100. We have a LG television so initially starting looking at LG sound bars. we have been informed we do not necessarily have to buy a LG sound bar for our model.

Currys currently have an LG LAS 455 H 2.1 Wireless sound bar in the sale for £129 . They claim it is reduced from £249.99. The reviews seems reasonable so you might consider this as an option if you are happier sticking with the LG brand. If you want another brand you might consider the Yahama YAS 105 which is available at various stores between £129 and £159. You can look it up on Richer sounds web site. This also has received good reviews and also has the advantage of the sub woofer being built in if space is a problem. The LG model is 300w whilst the Yamaha is 120w.

Check out What HiFi awards section. I use these as a starting point before going and using my ears/eyes. I haven't gone wrong yet with any of their recommendations.
