tablet not new

Hi, I bought a tablet for my son for christmas, I've purchased this from a well known high street shop.
On receiving the tablet the cashier asked did I mind that it had been checked (therefore the packaging was open) I stated I didn't.
Fast forward to christmas and my son was thrilled with the tablet, it looked new and had no marks on it, a few days later I was setting up the wifi at his sister's when I noticed it had an email address registered on it and a particular app was linked to this.
Therefore I'm presuming it's been used and returned, obviously I'm not best pleased as I bought it as new.

Anyone have any idea of my rights in this, I'm fairly sure I can return and ask for a replacement as it's not as described however I just want to be sure before I go there.

Out of interest what make is the tablet and who is the retailer?

The reason I ask is we've had two Amazon products a kindle and a fire stick. I bought one the othe was a give. Both came sealed and brand new when each were set up,they were pre installed with the details from the Amazon account used to purchase it.

I don't doubt you have purchased a return and was probably set up by the previous owner, is it a used item or a return that can still be sold as new?
  • it was argos and a amazon fire. I bought it as new.

Is it really worth the hassle? If it's otherwise in perfect condition just do a factory reset.

You don't know why it was returned. I've got 3 Kindles, but I'm in the midst of a return with the 4th as the charging port is flaky - you so much as look at the cable and it stops charging. Argos were cheeky to tell the OP that it had been "checked" as they must have known full well it was a return. Kindles all (3 different versions I have bought at least) come in an outer box which can only be opened by removing a tear off strip, making it impossible to reseal. Personally I would want what I paid for - a brand new, factory sealed item.

I guessed this would be Argos. Unfortunately, their no quibble returns policy means there is a good chance that anything you buy from them may have been bought previously, opened, and returned.

I bought a couple of pen sets from Argos as Xmas gifts. I checked them before I left the store. They had both been opened and the ink cartridges were missing. I returned them immediately and got a refund, and bought pristine goods from a different retailer.

I'd never buy goods like that if the box has been opened, Argos are very good at saying the box was opened to check its contents. I'd take it back to be on the safe side.

The condition is not the issue, I paid for a brand new item therefore that's what I expect them to supply me with.

Happily the cashier I spoke to happened to be the duty manager and she apologised profusely for being given a returned item.
She did try to exchange it for the same model (new and unopened of course) but they've sold out completely within my area and she couldn't locate one to be delivered to me.
Therefore at no extra cost she has exchanged it for a different tablet that cost more than I paid for the original tablet.
It's a different make but has much better specifications and my son is thrilled with it.
