USB connections not working

Options
Yesterday, my USB modem seems to have died. I also used it on my laptop as well as desktop.

The laptop flashed up warnings that it was giving the USB ports a power surge so I unplugged it. Laptop USB connections were fine when I added a new modem but on the desktop, the USB ports are really dodgy.

I have a USB keyboard which still works but when my USB hub is put in the other USB desktop socket, it does not detect anything. It is totally dead.

What can I do to get it to recognise USB devices when plugged in?

Thanks.

USB modems tend to pull the full 500mA that the ports can provide, remember usb ports work in pairs so you normally can use the other usb port in the pair, if your connecting to a usb hub it needs to be powered or use another port on the PC.
