Cost of re-pointing a chimney?

Before I spend my lunch break phoning roofing companies I thought Id ask here :)

The survey has come back on the house we are buying and the surveyor has advised getting the chimney re-pointed.

Has anyone had this done on their property? If so can I ask how much it cost?

Also is scaffolding normally required?

We are in the South East

Sorry, can't help with the price, I'm in the Midlands where stuff is cheaper.
Firstly I wouldn't just accept that it needs repointing unless a mortgage is dependant upon it being done. The surveyor gave us a list of things that needed doing when we bought this house, 15 years later I've still not done most of them & it's still fine.
When we had our chimney repointed they did it from a cherry picker or sitting on the ridge, it depends what access is like.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.

At London prices it will cost around £400 parts and labour (100 to scrape out the old mortar, and 300 to do new pointing), plus £250 for a cherrypicker for half a day.

If it can be done by ladder then would be around 400 all in.

As EssexExile said, don't go and do it unless it's needed. The surveyor will pick up these issues and most of them are not half as important or urgent as they sound in the report.
