Tanking

Rentokil have quoted 10k to damp proof and tank my basement flat. 3 rooms.

Half the cost is for the "special plastering" they use for tanking.

How does this sound?

You can get the KA tanking slurry for under £20 from Encon and it will cover 8m2 when 2 coats are used (recommended). Many renderers and general builders are used to doing this sort of work and it may be considerably cheaper than a national company.

You may also look for a local damp proofing company.

I was quoted 5K to have my cellar (8m long x 3m wide x 2.4m high) walls and floor completely tanked with a plastic membrane, a sump and pump installed and have the walls and floor screeded/plastered over.

What sort of damp are you suffering from?
Do you have a high water table?
What is the ground like around the perimeter of the cellar?

If you can stop the water getting to the outside wall, you can stop the damp. Any waterproofing you apply after that is a bib and braces approach.

Ah sorry, your a basement flat. You probably wouldn't be able to do works around the perimeter which stops most of the preventative measures available.

If it was for living space I would apply the membrane to the walls and floor as it is the only real way you will never have any problems. With the tanking, if you get any cracks in the walls from building movement/settling then water will be able to get in. With the membrane and sump solution, this will never happen.
