Can anyone give me some advise?
The business were I work is about to close for 3 weeks for refurbishment. My boss and owner of the business says he will not pay me and my colleagues for these 3 weeks.
Is this right?
Thanks

Not unless you have a zero-hours contract.
Your boss might require you to take annual leave to cover the period, but otherwise has to pay you normal wages.A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0 -
Can he ask us to take our holidays? Surely our holidays are for when we want to be off not when he decides to close the office?0

Your employer can tell you when you must take holidays. And the answer you have is not entirely correct - a lay-off without pay can be a contractual condition in which case then the answer is yes, you can be laid off with no pay.0 -

Yes he can. Many engineering companies, for example, have fixed closure dates and staff have to take their holiday at that time. There is no entitlement to take holiday when you want to.0 -

An employer can tell you when you have to take your holiday, but IIRC they should give you double the equivalent period of notice, ie, if he wants you to take 3 weeks he should give you 6 weeks notice.

Oh - I should have added that if you have less than two years employment, then you can be dismissed. In which case you will get notice pay and nothing else. That might be a cheaper option for the employer, so do be careful what you ask for if you don't have two years service.0

Thank you all for the advice.0

Does the contract have lay-off clauses?0

No our contract doesn't mention anything about lay-offs. Does this make a difference?0
