If Argos only offer a repair - take the item back with you and do this yourself via Microsoft. It will be much quicker and easier.0

Talk about first world problems, why is the OP so against a repair from the outset? Don't you think its wasteful to simply disregard something that may well give years of service after a simple repair?
In any case... 4 months down the line I cant see Argos simply handing over a brand new unit and I don't see why they should have to given how unfairly disproportionate that would be cost wise vs a repair.0 -

It's never a good idea to buy electrical goods so long before they are used. Even if you tested it on the day you bought it could have still stopped working within hours of its first use.
I'd not mention SOGA as most Argos goods come with an excellent guarantee. Try going into the store and speak to the manager and politely explain the situation and see what he/she will do. You could also take in your sons birth certificate.
If you have no luck it might even be worth trying another store, nothing ventured.......0
