Hi Bedsit Bob - it is not the case that insurance through an account is "usually for European holidays". Based on what you say, you have Barclays "Travel Pack", which is European cover, because that's the pack you selected.

However, "Travel Plus Pack" cover is worldwide, so it is possible that the OP's sister has this cover, or one of several other Barclays Travel insurances that are no longer on sale.

OP - I hope your sister is ok.

Don't you have to notify companies of your travel plans for insurance purposes ? As the OP says she "didn't think to take out travel insurance" doesn't sound as though anyone was advised that she was going to Argentina.

A typical bank account supplied policy has no such requirement.

Why do you think you would have to do that? I have Nationwide free cover and I can see nothing to suggest that there is any need to advise them of travel plans. It seems to me to be no different to a paid-for annual travel policy, and I would expect that to provide the cover specified without needing to communicate any further with the insurer.

I hope shes doing okay in herself and makes a good recovery.

Is she in a private or public hospital? If private she needs to get herself transferred to a publif hospital. In which case she does not need to pay for further care.

However, a plan needs to be made for the time between being discharged and being able to fly.

I don't know if the British embassy would be able to provide any help or advice.

    Quite.

I don't have to notify the insurance company, of my intention to travel.

I can travel as often as I like, provided I'm not abroad for more than 30 consecutive days.
