Is It Worth Stopping a Lost Cheque?

Hi
A few weeks ago; I posted a cheque for a £100 to a relative. They never recieved it.
My bank charges a small fee to stop a cheque.
Is it worth my while paying the fee to stop the cheque in case someone attempts to fraudulently cash it. Or I am I entitled to a refund from the bank in such an instance in the same way that I would be if my credit card was fraudulently used?
Thanks.

HSBC Charge unless its a lost BLANK cheque or Stolen !, The school lost a £60 cheque and I was told it would cost me £12 to stop it, I tried in on-line banking and it was only free if I stated it was blank (Which it was not) so in the end I just wrote another cheque to the school, its well over 6 months old now so hopefully I will be safe:
Cheques
Stopped Cheques resulting from theft
or loss of blank cheques: Free
Stopped Cheques (other than as above): £12 per cheque, £10 per cheque via Online Banking.
Special presentation of a cheque: £15 per cheque0 -
In all probability it has been stolen just the thief has not got the brains or the means to alter the cheque and try to pay it in.
I agree with other posters that in this case a cheque should be stopped for free.0 -
Thanks for the replies.
I will see if the bank will stop the cheque for free as it has been lost; though I expect that I will have to pay their fee.
Is there no possibility of redress from the bank if the cheque has been cashed fraudulently?
It seems strange that if the same thing happened with a credit card you would be compensated; but seemingly not with a cheque.0
