Better able than BG on its own presumably, yes.

Yes, but at least the taxpayer won't get the bill for this one. Just Shell shareholders.

I agree, if Shell management insist they can maintain the dividend like they are insisting this deal will pay, they might leave Shell seriously short of cash before they are forced to admit they are wrong, and have to backtrack with a costly rights issue?

Making Shell staff redundant would be expensive for the company, so I can't see such big savings from synergies. Especially when BG management have shown themselves to be far more astute than Shell, you only have to look at the price they got to see that. If this goes ahead, BG management ought to be running the combined company.

The details indicate benefits assuming an oil price above $50

I recall back in April Shell were trying to persuade analysts the deal worked at $70 a barrel. How did they get to $50?

How much of the $ half billion or from Shell's slush fund will ISS be trousering indirectly ;)
You made a statement which I identified to be untrue and you come back with this. Seriously?

I really can't respond to Daily Wail type 'sound-bite' comments.

    What statement was that?
(as for the Daily Mail I don't read it, so I don't know what comment you are referring to there either)

    This one.....

    The only people trying to defend this clearly overpriced deal I have heard are either;
Professionals sharing the half billion dollars Shell are paying in fees.
Shell Management looking to save face.
Those with shares in both companies, so don't mind how much Shell is overpaying

Unless you have some evidence that ISS (as an example) are sharing in this honey pot your comment against them is merely mud slinging (dare I say slander?).

I have no issue with people having opposing views to my own but I prefer comments to have some basis in fact.

I think you mean libel? but it couldn't be that because of the part of my quote I have highlighted.
My only reference to ISS was asking a question (which remains unanswered). Asking a question is not libel either.
Incidentally, if ISS did try to claim someone had libelled them they would have to prove they had a good reputation to damage, and that would be complicated by the non compliance fines they have had to pay to the SEC
Otherwise you make a fair comment, thank you.:)

I think we all agree its a good deal for BG shareholders.
But some of us think Shell is paying too much, making it a bad deal for Shell shareholders.

    Thanks Glen
So the general consensus is to go ahead with it and re invest the cash element into Shell shares.
    Thanks

OK, but the danger you are in right now is that if Shell shareholders vote the deal down BG shares are likely to crash. To to get some idea how much BG shares would fall remember Shell's offer is 50% higher than the market price of BG shares - before the oil price halved!. However, it looks like the deal will go through because most of the big Shell Shareholders also hold BG shares so don't mind Shell overpaying for them... http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-35267169
