Ethernet splitter

We have a virgin superhub and currently on 200mb bb.

The superhub only has 4 ports on the back and we are short due to gaming pcs at Xmas.

I have seen the splitters from netgear etc but am concerned that it will reduce the speed to the pcs. Is this the case and is there a particular model anybody can recommend, preferably with 8 ports ( as I understand you lose one to connect to the superhub).

Thanks in advance

Xx

The linked thread pretty much covers it, and the OP of that thread chose the solution which I would have (ie. a gigabit switch).

With a 200 Mb/s BB service, it is highly unlikely that you'll swamp the network (unless downloading large files, whilst watching HD movies, whilst having a gaming party).

You will lose one on the "super"hub and one on the switch so you will endup with 3+7 i.e 10 ports available, it will not reduce the speed at the pc's measurably, the max speed at the hub will always be what the hub can deliver. Without going into the ins and outs of TCP and IP and the transport layer a switch should not affect the throughput too much.

  • That's great. Thank you all for your advice. I will order the 8 port gigaswitch.

We have 2 teenagers on gaming pc's, games consoles and sometimes 3 can be streaming films and watching youtube so very heavy usage in our household :(

    Thanks again
