Problems accessing Steam

I'm having a problem with Steam. If I click the shortcut on my desktop, the Steam icon appears on my task bar but if I click on it nothing happens. If I hover over it I can see the steam homepage, if I right click on it I get options but none of them can make the screen appear. I can get the big screen option to work but it's very awkward to use. I've been on Google but none of the things I've tried have worked so far. Anyone ever had this and if so how did you solve it please?

Not sure if relevant but Steam have had login server problems recently. Seems okay now.

Unfortunately the total lack of error handling with Steam makes it very difficult to troubleshoot issues, something I'd check is to see if Steam is using bandwidth or not - I had a similar issue a while ago, couldn't get the main Steam window open but I could see through the router and task manager that Steam was using a lot of bandwidth. I left it like that for a while until the bandwidth usage dropped off and it came up fine, it was downloading some huge patch for a game.which seemed to trip it up.

    Try Windows Key + P (Win+P).

This is the display mode switcher, it could be that steam is being displayed somewhere outside the screen.

Thank you, this seems to have worked.
