Couple of strange ones - US Money Orders / Large $ Switch

Morning,
We have a fairly urgent requirement to send a US $ Money Order for teacher licensing and have come up short with the post office, our banks (Clydesdale and TSB) and the various cheque cashing places locally. We're in Edinburgh and hoping somewhere relatively local can provide this. Does anyone have any ideas? If necessary, we have friends in the US who can get one and post it to us but we'd much rather get it out of the way sooner.
Also, on a related but separate note, does anyone have any advice on where would be best to facilitate a reasonably large transfer of £ to $? Somewhere in the region of £250k.
