Hello guys, i'm looking for small panel van. It will be my work horse. I'm interested in these:

Citroen Berlingo (first gen)
Vauxhall Combo
Ford Transit (connect)

I don't have any experience with these models so I'm little bit confused. What do you think which one is the best in this class?

  • Not exactly apples and apples - the Berlingo and Combo are CDV (car-derived vans) and the Transit is a full-size light-commercial vehicle - do you mean the Transit Connect?
  • That's right, i mean Transit connect. Sorry

I would point out that the Berlingo is a van that was turned into a van like MPV.

The Connect is closely related to a Focus.

If you look at the original post you can see he has put (connect) after the Transit, did the OP add that in later?

I have a Berlingo Multispace at the moment, the mk2 version with the 1360cc petrol lump.

The driving position will not be to every bodies liking as the steering wheel is at an awkward angle. And I wouldn't buy it with the 1.6hdi lump, if you can get a 1.9d then that would be a better bet for reliability.

The gearbox on the Citroen is also a bit notchy and feels "old school" if you get what I mean by that.

The Connect would be nicer to drive, the gearbox is nicer and I would suspect will have a synchro reverse like the Focus and Mondeo.

If you get the less powerful 1.8 Tddi engine it should also be reliable, if not as smooth and fast as later tdci engines.

Not sure if they did the 1.6tdci engine in the Connect but again I would avoid that one. For same reasons as the 1.6Hdi as they are the same engine in case you were not aware, not intending to teach you how to suck eggs but just in case you weren't aware.

Not sure why part of my initial post is missing in your quote.

But I added the caveat that the OP might have be changed.

    See above.

Time is clearly visible to one that actually reads it rather than just rants.

Another slip up from the latest self appointed mod.

    Thanks for your input.

Another pointless post from the latest self appointed DM.
  • Actually I like Ford transit connect shape and I think it have bigger load space. I'm just aware about engines. I've heard bad opinions about 1.8 diesel engines. Anyone know exactly about them? Thanks

Yes, per post #3 and edit time.

I'd point out that the Berlingo was based on the ZX/306 platform, and is, therefore, indeed a CDV.
