Memory stick - really stupid question!

Sorry to be so thick, but I ordered my son a memory stick for his laptop to store information on, but when it arrived it was more like a card with no USB connector attached - nothing like the things I have seen at work! There is a slot on the laptop that it will fit into, but not sure if it has the same use as the thing I intended to get him.
I always thought the things with the USB connector were called memory sticks! Am I wrong? If so, what is the thing I really wanted called and what is the thing I have got for?
Thanks.

Do you have a link to the website you ordered it from.
It sounds like you have got a memory card rather than a memory stick
Does it look anything like one of these ?

Thanks, have just had a look on this site and the exact one I purchased is on there!! It is a SanDisk 512MB memory stick PRO, but I am still not sure exactly what it is for!! Why do they call something that is a card a stick? From looking there, it seems I needed a flash drive.Stopped smoking 27/12/2007, but could start again at any time :eek:0 -

Thanks for your help, yes this is what I wanted but I really thought they were called memory sticks, that's what everyone at work calls them! Will just have to order a flash drive I suppose and try and find out if I can use the memory stick for anything. It certainly won't fit in my camera it is much too big, that takes an SD card.Stopped smoking 27/12/2007, but could start again at any time :eek:0 -
Strictly speaking, only the Sony devices described here should be called Memory Sticks but the term has come to be used for any plug-in flash memory device. It's a bit like all vacuum cleaners being called hoovers.
Oh, and I'll just add my usual caveat about mem... er, I mean USB flash drives. Don't keep your only copy of anything important on them. They do get lost or stolen and go wrong.0 -
every 1 calls them something diff. i'd just go off the picture and the specs like USB 2.0 then generally u cant go wrong if ur not 100% sure about what your buying.0
