You can even get 72 hour deodorants these days.. I mean, now long do these people not want to wash for..?:rotfl:

Anyway, glad the granddaughter liked the roll-on. Hope the conversation wasn't too awkward. I would have suggested a stick or roll-on, as they are much better than the sprays.

I have sensitive skin and use Dove (spray) with no problems. I especially like the one which smells of cucumber.

I don't think her parents have noticed, to them she is still their baby girl!

I think you should be having a word with her parents, they are not doing her any favours by being in denial about her growing up, do they want her to be bullied or be embarrassed? If she's developing rapidly, have they talked about periods and made preparations (i.e. bought a supply of pads etc.)?

  • Natural crystal deodourant is a great idea. They sell in health food stores or online via amazon, have put a link to one from holland and barrett below in case it is useful. This is a true deodourant as opposed to anti perspirant so it doesn't stop sweat but does stop the bacteria that causes the odour. Just wet the crystal after showering and rub it under the arms, you need to have clean underarms when you put it on for it to be effective. It's quite cheap and it lasts well over a year for one stick.

Can anyone recommend one? Something gentle perhaps. Despite having showered that morning I noticed my granddaughter was definitely smelling adult-style sweaty during an exciting Christmas day family party. I'd hate her to be the object of derision at school - she's at secondary school although one of the youngest. She is however, a big girl (tall and broad) and well developed so it's not surprising that hormones are starting to play games. I don't think her parents have noticed, to them she is still their baby girl!

    Any recommendations please?

Sounds to me a bit like one of those rites-of-passages imo. I also think that though you may have a point with your granddaughters body odour, it can be such a sensitive time and things can get taken far more seriously than you intend them to be and be blown out of proportion in the mind of a younger teen (or just about any teen actually! But especially when hormones start to kick in).

Why not turn it into a day out? See what's about with your granddaughter and as well as deodorant, explain things like how to do your hair, other "grown up" type products (like exfoliation and even shaving if you think she's curious- though I advocate not pushing anything onto a teen who is not ready, it's just the world I came from where we were all shaving and plucking eyebrows when we were 11-not everyone is the same!)

I'd also talk to the 12 year old's mother- if you are related or not as it could potentially create a rift if she feels you are taking over or if it could potentially cause offence (as in she feels you are in some way making a comment on her ability to be a mother which I think can be a pretty major offence to cause).

If you do have a day out with her, don't forget to explain how things work and the importance of them so she understands and doesn't just feel like she has to do these things without reason if you want to avoid the risk of things being relegated to the bottom of a never-ending gym bag!

I use Superdrugs deodorant as it's cruelty free, I find it lovely and soft and does the job better than others I have tried over the years.
