Deodorant suitable for 12 yr old

Options
Can anyone recommend one? Something gentle perhaps. Despite having showered that morning I noticed my granddaughter was definitely smelling adult-style sweaty during an exciting Christmas day family party. I'd hate her to be the object of derision at school - she's at secondary school although one of the youngest. She is however, a big girl (tall and broad) and well developed so it's not surprising that hormones are starting to play games. I don't think her parents have noticed, to them she is still their baby girl!

Any recommendations please?

  • Boots sell a kids deodorant

However at 12 shes probably old enough to use a proper anti-perspirant, the cream/stick type ones tend to be more gentle than roll ons.

No, this is definitely still the case for my 17yo son! He has sensitive skin and has trouble finding a deodorant that doesnt sting or cause his underarms to come out in a rash. He isnt keen on the feel of stick type deodorants.

I also have sensitive skin and I use an aloe vera Sure roll on for sensitive skin and this works for me. She probably does need someone to talk to her about changing her clothes, showering regularly and so on. A lot of kids aren't aware that they are starting to smell sweaty when they get to that age.
  • i have excema and sensitive skin and have since being kid - i would recommend sanex
  • Sanex do a very reasonably priced stick deodorant which should be all she needs.
Please don't encourage her to start using harsh and chemical laden anti-perspirants at this tender age. ( or any age come to that)

If you have a health food shop near you, the JASON products are good, and have reasonably natural, non-toxic ingredients

If she doesn't want to use a deodorant, she could just rub a bit of bicarbonate of soda under her arms, like talcum powder. It does the job just as well!

What makes a deodorant unsuitable for a teenager out of interest? I am middle aged and use either Sure or Dove usually because I like their fragrances and have no problems with my 14 year old daughter borrowing them if she has run out. She chooses her own based on the scent she likes at the time as does my 16 year old son. I did the same from about the age of OP's granddaughter. Are some deodorants full of pheromones or something which would make them immoral for a 12 year old :D

Talcum powder is worse than useless in my opinion and I'd be amazed if bicarbonate of soda would give anti odour protection all day too.
  • I agree talcum powder would not stop the odour, but bicarb definitely does! Perhaps I worded it badly, I just meant rub some bicarb on your underarms. I've used bicarbonate of soda in place of deodorant for years and no I don't smell, at all and nor do my clothes! :p But I can imagine a 12 year old would rather have a deodorant, like her friends at school.

Thanks for all the good ideas. In the end, I had a spare Morrison's basics roll on which she was keen to try. I've given it to her to take home, she's well chuffed. Fancy liking something your granny uses, I wouldn't have done that in a million years. She's not quite old enough to be into 'labels' yet!

Have a quick Google and you will find lots of articles such as this one

Ok, lots of people are going to jump up and down and say the theory is rubbish, but we each have to make our own decisions in these matters.
I gave up using Sure etc years ago, but a few months ago ended up using on of those sprays for a few weeks. Within that time I started to develop painful lumps in my armpit which have since cleared after I discontinued use.
We all shower or bath at least once a day nowadays, and wash our clothes frequently so there really is no reason that we should smell.
Interestingly I have noticed that most of the standard anti-perspirants on sale now offer 24 or 48 hour protection....what kind of chemicals are they using to seal the sweat pores so efficiently and do we REALLY want to be slathering those on our (freshly shaved) armpits daily?
