Not sure if this is 'phones' or 'techie', I'll try here.
I got a new android phone, and I've put all my contacts into it. Part way through the process I noticed there's an option to save them to sim or save to device, so I continued saving to sim as that's what I'd started.
Is there a way to copy all contacts from the sim to the device, for backup in case I ever change sim? Equivalant of copy + paste.

Your contacts will be saved in your Google account. If you change SIM it'll synchronise with Google and your contacts will magically appear.0

I see, so it is do-able, thanks. It's my first android phone ever, my last one was Firefox OS (I know).
I did see something about synching with Google, but I don't think I've done that.0 -

If you've saved/moved to phone, and have a Google account, it's probably happening automatically. You can check by looking at your contacts in gmail and seeing if they're in sync. And if they are, start updating them so phone numbers are linked to email addresses...0 -
Are you sure that this is the case for contacts saved to SIM?
Actually I'm not, I'm not actually sure where on my phone my contacts are, my last 3 phones have been Android and after I loaded them somewhere on the first one I haven't had to do anything since when I've updated so I don't need to care if they're on the SIM or the phone memory. So it could be right that it's not done from the SIM.0 -
I always back my contacts up to my PC - NOT using kies (which is no good) - but just plug the phone in to your PC USB port - using the charger lead, let Windows find the phone driver software and look for the folder with your contacts - simply copy the folder to your PC.. ...0
