  • ....or laid, do you think! :D

I suppose at least the sign didn't ask partners to refrain from getting laid on the bed ...!

'Can I get' in a shop or restaurant makes me cringe.....

It is can I have or may I have.

I must admit I really do loathe this one, and my children say it too :(

In fact we would have been told off at school for saying "Can I have ..." in favour of "May I have ..." As a result, I've always found "May I have ..." annoyingly prissy, even though I know it's correct.

Just because they misspell a word or put an apostrophe where it doesn't belong is their opinion worth any less than that of someone else?

    Yes :D

Although I'm aware that I'm in the wrong, I can't help the fact that if I read "I dun no weather I would of..." I think "well, if you can't even bother to try to be intelligible then I don't see why I should bother to listen to what you have to say."

Then you have a superiority complex. :p

Personally, if someone posts asking for advice, as long as I can understand what they are getting at, I would try to help if at all possible.
Don't you think if they take the time to post on here, they at least deserve a little attention?

The idea of not responding simply because someone is not as literate as yourself is incredibly smug.

Any native English speaker sending me a CV littered with spelling mistakes can expect it to be binned, no matter how well qualified the applicant otherwise appears to be!

And, depending on the job, perhaps you'd miss an excellent employee.

One of my ex colleagues would stammer and stutter and his writing was abysmal. This was due to the fact he was extremely clever and neither his mouth or his pen could keep up with his brain.

I once interviewed a graduate who struggled during the interview by any normal assessment he would not have got the job but I had this feeling about him, I've never been able to explain it, so I gave him the job. He turned out to be one of the best software engineers I've ever met.

Sorry, I would've thought that the smiley made it clear I was being slightly tongue-in-cheek but it would appear that I was mistaken. Thanks for calling me smug and superior though, I really appreciate it. Not as much as I appreciate you using the correct advice/advise... ;)
  • Possibly some people on here are typing on their phones and using textspeak? Or it could just be that they are bad spellers :rotfl:

I'm sure my own English is not 100% correct 100% of the time, anyway!

Hands up! I detest bad grammar; especially on posts written by ex Uni students/graduates.

I was rubbish at English, and my teacher was so shocked that I managed to scrape a C grade at O' Level.

Yes, I am a grammar snob.

Although, hand on heart, I still could not define an adjective/adverb yet I know when it's written correctly.

If I was being corrected on this forum, I'd be thankful and try to up my game and learn from it, not get huffy.

    I did see the smiley.

But you then went on to add this:

which is the reason I called you smug.

And whether I'd used 'advice' or 'advise', I'm damn sure my meaning would have been perfectly clear to you.
Of course, if I had used the wrong word, you could have made a song and dance about it.

I'm sure that would have made you feel much more superior ....
