Vaillant ecotec boiler - has hot water no heating

Hello,

I have a problem with my boiler and I hope someone here can help! I suspect it's something simple actually but I just don't know what it is.

The boiler (a Vaillant ecotec pro combi, I have pics but can't seem to insert them here) was working fine until a blackout hit my block. The blackout lasted a few hours and when the electricity came back on, the boiler turned back on as well. However, while the hot water is working fine, the heating no longer works. I've tried turning the radiator switch to 'on' constantly, turning up the heating temperature, and I've checked the pressure - it's 1.5 so should be fine. I've also tried turning the whole boiler off at the mains and then back on again but it makes no difference. All the radiators have been bled recently and were working fine before the blackout but now all of them are cold.

When I turn on hot water taps the boiler makes a noise and the ignition seems to turn on. But there's nothing, no noise at all, when I turn on heating.

I tried pressing the i button and it says S30, but what does that mean?

Please help!

Much appreciated.

A quick Google search you could do yourself -

S30 No heating demand from.external source.

What is your thermostat set to ?

We have had a similar problem to the OP a couple of times.

Our thermostat is in the hall and both times it happened was after we had visitors with young children.

The little s..s must have turned the thermostat down. The first time it happened we only just discovered it before paying the plumber a £80 call out!
  • Could it be the motorised valve? You can slide the metal lever across to open up the valve manually. (I'm not a plumber -- you may have guessed)

A tip from my maintenance engineer - give it a boot, just as if all else fails with your computer - switch it off and then back on.

In the OP, you say you have turned up the heating temperature; did you mean the temperature control on the boiler or the thermostat mounted on a wall somewhere? Is your thermostat mechanical/analogue, digital (battery powered) or wireless? If you have a code S30 and no other fault codes, I would tend to believe that there is no heating demand. Check the thermostat works by turning it down then up, do you hear a click? If it is wireless, you probably won't hear it at the thermostat but at it's control box.
  • Thanks everyone for the replies! I have a wireless thermostat but it has been broken since the day I moved into the flat. I've never used or programmed it before and always controlled the boiler manually, so I'm mystified by why it's suddenly become important. I have tried switching the boiler off and on again many times. I don't think the thermostat is fixable, is there any way to override it or would I have to replace it?

If it's a wireless stat then there should be a receiver box somewhere - there will be an override button on it.

    Happy hunting!

How have you controlled the boiler manually? What do you use to tell it to turn on/off, i.e. create a heating demand.
