If nothing is mouldy or has crawlies in it, it's good to go
But the. As pastures new points out, you are spending thousands so why worry about a fiver?
Boil up the pulses and go feed the birds0 -
you have had the stuff in the cupboard for years which sound like the makings of a soup pearl barley split peas and herbs
you haven't used them up to now so what makes you think you are going to use them now?
I would bin all the out dates dried pulses and the herbs bin the jam and use the tuna and become a more savvy shopper in future and check the cupboards before you buy new stuff0 -
Sorry would be more helpful but ill/exhausted had to rush dad to hospital and just came back.
I can't find it now but I remember reading a blog or something where there where other uses for pearl barley other than to eat. I remember a few being making home brew, soak in the bath, bird feed and animal feed (small holder goats/sheep, pigs and chickens)
herbs and spices if in air tight jars/containers keep - I think there is a 6 month rule - which everyone ignores.
To be honest in your case next 3 months are going to be stressful and I wouldn't want to add a little stomach upset to it0 -
Everything should be fine, but I'd probably chuck the 2013 jam and the herbs and spices.
I'm still eating porridge I've had since 2009 (and it's been opened).A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0 -
Years old herbs will probably have lost their flavour. so bin them. the rest.........unopened? I would use. Opened - bin.0
-
I agree about the herbs and spices, they will have lost their flavour over time so unless they were really expensive I'd bin them!
When my parents moved a couple of years ago, I was still living at home and helped them go through the cupboards - we found curry powder that went out of date in 2001. We opened it and it smelt of nothing at all!!0 -
If there's anything you don't want I'll happily take it off your hands0
-
I would eat all of that, except the jam. I don't buy jam because there is too much sugar in it. Put it all in a prominent place so you can see it every day. Don't put it in a box and hide it, or a year later it will be even more out of date. It needs to be used up.

Emptying out cupboards,I have found an assortment of items, close to or out of date, and I wonder if they really are no good to use.Can anyone tell me-would you use or bin:
-golden syrup, unopened and dated Aug 2012 (doesn't say whether best before end or use-by) - I'd make a 'treacle' tart
-tinned tuna,BBE November 2015 - What??? Tinned & only 4 weeks past BBE date? Use this!!!! Maybe tuna risotto with the arborio rice?
-dried pearl barley ,BBE March 2012 (opened) - Bin it
-dried pearl barley,BBE Dec 2014 (never opened-I know,I know....) Use in soup
-dried split green peas,BBE July 2015 (never opened) Use in soup
-arborio risotto rice,BB 5/4/13,never opened Risotto
-assorted dried herbs and spices, some absolutely years old. If you're not going to use them in the near future, I'd bin them
-jars of unopened jam,BB June 2013,and Nov 2014 Use on toast
I really am not a wasteful shopper. The jam is OH (the only person in the house who eats jam),thinking we have run out,so stocking up when he is in the supermarket buying "something for lunch".The dried stuff is from lots of soup recipes I tried a few winters ago,and I would like to start that again when we finally have a new kitchen (demolition and rebuilding works been going on for 3 months now!!)
Herbs (like soup) is from trying lots of different Slimming World recipes, each one needing only 1-2 herbs or spice,so have built up a collection over the last few years.I do have bayleaves for recipes from when I was weaning my now-13year old !!!!:rotfl::rotfl:
Thank you all for any advice x
As you're having your kitchen done soon, I'd use the stuff up as suggested above before the work starts or bin it.0 -
Oh wow,what a fanrastic response-thank you everyone.
I think I will do a combination ofthese suggestions.
As mentioned by a few, compared to the cost of the huge house extension,it is silly trying to save up-to-13yo dried spices (not expensive brands),just to save a few pounds.I really would prefer the space.
So,the plan is to dump the spices that are years old,(naturally keep those that are still in sealed jars, and not as old),cook up lentils and feed to birds (my 4 kids would love that as a holiday project),and make OH have his jam on toast every morning
.
Thank you for all the suggestions.I do appreciate the response.SPC #36 :staradminx 8.SPC7=£751.10 SPC8=£651.04 SPC9=£843.00 SPC10=£872.76
