I am in the process of emptying out our kitchen, ready for demolition and rebuild over the next few months (part of a large extension).
Emptying out cupboards,I have found an assortment of items, close to or out of date, and I wonder if they really are no good to use.Can anyone tell me-would you use or bin:
-golden syrup, unopened and dated Aug 2012 (doesn't say whether best before end or use-by)
-tinned tuna,BBE November 2015
-dried pearl barley ,BBE March 2012 (opened)
-dried pearl barley,BBE Dec 2014 (never opened-I know,I know....)
-dried split green peas,BBE July 2015 (never opened)
-arborio risotto rice,BB 5/4/13,never opened
-assorted dried herbs and spices, some absolutely years old.
-jars of unopened jam,BB June 2013,and Nov 2014
I really am not a wasteful shopper. The jam is OH (the only person in the house who eats jam),thinking we have run out,so stocking up when he is in the supermarket buying "something for lunch".The dried stuff is from lots of soup recipes I tried a few winters ago,and I would like to start that again when we finally have a new kitchen (demolition and rebuilding works been going on for 3 months now!!)
Herbs (like soup) is from trying lots of different Slimming World recipes, each one needing only 1-2 herbs or spice,so have built up a collection over the last few years.I do have bayleaves for recipes from when I was weaning my now-13year old !!!!:rotfl::rotfl:
Thank you all for any advice x

Tuna, rice and jam I'd give a chance.
Can't stand pulses, so other than stuffing juggling bags can see no point in keeping them.
Herbs will probably have lost their taste, use too much and the dish just tastes of lawn mowings - so sniff/use or sniff/bin.0 -
I think everything will be fine.0

Pearl barley from 2012? Definitely bin. I'd bin the 2014 lot also.
Rice from 2013? Bin.
Tuna: use it now or bin it.
Split peas from July this year? Probably fine, but if you're not going to use them in the next couple of weeks, chuck 'em.
Spice that are absolutely years old?? Straight in the bin - really, what's the point?
Jam from months ago? In the bin.
New cupboards, new start. Chuck the lot and buy what you need so you can build a useful store of stuff.I'm an adult and I can eat whatever I want whenever I want and I wish someone would take this power from me.

I'd bin the lot... you're about to spend a fortune on building work etc etc ... sometimes life's too short to worry about saving £5s worth of food. The space will be worth more than that to you as it's less stuff to pile up in a corner waiting .....
Go on, bin it. You know you just want us to tell you it's OK.
Well, it's OK.0 -

I too would use the majority of it and instead of shopping I would plan a few meals around them in the next few days The herbs and spices use your nose if it smells OK then use if not much smell then bin or use more of. But then I never look at BBF dates at all I grew up in an era when such things were unheard of and I am still here
:):)

I would defo use it. x0

Anything with BEST BEFORE date, I'd use (apart from pearl barley which I loathe with a passion
).
I believe herbs do lose their flavour after a while.0 -
I'd eat the lot, but I think the herbs and spices might well have lost their savour. But you can just increase the quantity of them to get the same effect.
Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.
