Spreadsheets for keeping track

Hi all,

I've started investing with HL today. I'm only going to be doing small amount for now, started with £100 then going to be adding £50pm for a few months then going to add another £50pm and so on.

I'm wondering if anyone had any spreadsheets and other documents/resources that may come in handy for keeping track of my holdings with percentages ETC?

Thanks
SI

  • Platform will do it for you but consider using someone cheaper than hl

I agree find someone cheaper than Ho, of course it depends on what you are investing in, etf's, it's, funds etc. Use the monevator site to work this out.

Secondly spreadsheets are easy to use so just create your own.

I use drive, because they let you use built in functions to grab share prices directly from LSE. Then multiply by the number of shares and you have the value. Subtract the amount you paid and you will have the start of tracking the increase or decrease of that particular investment.

Just copy that row and change the ISIN of your investment. And so on

It's all basic spreadsheet stuff that any school kid could do.

    Cheers fj
  • Re Tracking - it depends what you are looking for.

For basic tracking whichever platform you use should be fine or as suggested you can construct a spreadsheet.

If you want something more advanced to give a holistic view of your finances (including bank accounts, credit cards, spend etc) and have access to a PC its worth considering a Personal Finance Program. I personally couldn't manage without.

I have been using the same version of Quicken for over 15 years, but there are lots of other free or low price options including Microsoft Money Sunset.

A quick there search on here or Google will give you lots of options / reviews
  • platforms usually show you the cost of each of your current holdings, and the gain/loss, and the percentage gain/loss. however, they don't show the gains/losses on holdings that you already sold; which is a bit like deleting a bit of history every time you sell something.

nor (at least IME) do platforms show the rate of compound returns, or comparison to an index, for the whole portfolio. this is a bit deficient, since it's the portfolio returns that matter.

You can use the SMF (Stock Market Functions) add-in wth excel to get the prices from the Google / Yahoo finance sites.
