im sure sw7 is a very pricey bit of london - i was wondering which postcode has the best centralness vs cost ratio - im sure the e postcodes are cheaper in relation to distance from central london assuming the geographical centre is the boundary between ec1 and wc1 postcodes

    Hey,

This is the thing. When you are based in Central London there wouldn't be much reason to pay for travel elsewhere. I don't know how the London transport system works exactly, so i am just presuming here without much knowledge.

I would have thought living in Central London would make things a lot more simpler. I thought £900 for a studio flat in that area of London was quite good, especially considering just outside of London in Kent, Surrey, Essex, Hertfordshire rent for a studio flat/flat is anywhere from £500-£800 p/m.

London has more opportunity but it also has more people. Unless you want to be an investment banker there's nothing you can't do in any other city, and in other cities you can actually afford to live.

    Hey,

I suppose that is true. Maybe i should just stick to visiting London for now lol.

  • What about living in W4 and working at your local off-licence part time?

    Hey,

Thanks makeyourdaddyproud, i think i might hold off for a little while. In fact, i spoke to a friend who lives in London and he mentioned he may be able to help me with work if i move there.

I may well move there for 3 months and see how i feel about living in London for good. Do you think i would be able to rent a room/place for that short amount of time?

    Thanks,

You'll either really love London or hate it.

Personally I love it, there's no where else in the UK or the World like London.

If you're lucky enough to have a job that you pass some of the many many landmarks on your commute or while you work it really is special.

If you're looking for a short term place 'Spare Room' and Gumtree are usually pretty good for these. I would suggest for room viewings get a hostel for a few nights, there can be pretty reasonable ones.

If you want to live by yourself it's going to be pricey. I earn 23k, live in London and can't afford to live by myself. I currently live in a 2 bed flat in a converted house. But since 2008 until last year I lived in house shares consisting of either 3-6 other people. I pay £730 for my portion of rent before bills in a nice place, large room and garden. You can get cheaper round here (Golders Green) but they are smaller rooms.

I've lived in London on a very low wage and I didn't get to do much - well without building up debt anyway!

A short term place would be a good idea to see if you like London or not.

Much better to live outside London with more disposable income and then visit. This gives you the best of both worlds. Or to put it another way avoids the worse of living 100% in London. I will declare an interest however. I used to live near (just outside M25) London. The only thing at all special about living down there was how expensive it was.

On the District Line, excellent schools nearby, that's a bargain for London

    Hey,

I agree with what you are saying. I have looked around online and prices of rent for properties are a lot, including sharing. I was scouring zoopla and found a property based in SW7 and it was £900 p/m for a studio flat with bills. That isn't too bad, but taking into consideration other costs, it would leave me without much money for entertainment. So i would need around 2k at least.
    Thanks,

Monthly salary of £2k is an annual salary of circa £31k. Do you earn this currently?

I really don't see how you aim to achieve this when you have next to no qualifications thus only likely to be eligible for minimum wage/zero hour contract jobs. Even sales jobs require a degree as a requirement (the companies I have seen who advertise in London).

You said your friend may be able to help you out with work - is this going to working for your friend or putting in a good word for the company he works at? Is it a job that will likely earn you £31k salary?

SW7 =Knightsbridge/South Ken area. Unless you are on megabucks, I don't see anyone being able to afford the prices in that area. I think whatever ad you may have saw, the seller was probably being less than truthful about the area (false postcode), or it was a box of a room being called a 'bedsit'.

Here is a quick example, bedsit for £410 per week
    https://www.gumtree.com/p/studios-bedsits-rent/studio-flat-in-south-kensington-london-sw7/1142985417

If you are looking to come down for 3 months try somewhere like Gumtree, Airbnb etc.

I don't know anyone who lives in zone 1 because it's too expensive, most of my friends live anywhere between zones 6-2 and the closer to zone 1, most of those are couples. The smart ones have moved out of London altogether.
