newcastle IT job market

Hi All,

I am planning to move from London to New castle. I am in IT field and my salary is around 60k per year.

Can anyone shed some light on how I can find out more about jobs in New castle and what would be expected income ?

I have looked at total jobs and there are no many jobs up there.

Are there any cities next to New castle that is good or known for IT services?

I know friends whom live in Leeds and say they earn as much as london but I am too far from leeds.
many thanks

The problem with earning £60k per year is you need to work in a very large city such as London, Birmingham or Manchester.

Tyne and Wear has over a million people in it and could support your occupation and expected salary. Tyne and Wear area is quite deprived generally but it's not quite as opposed as London. London has some very poor people and some extremely rich people. Newcastle residents are more in the middle. I don't think you'll get £60k in the area.....but if you really think about it you won't need £60k to have the same lifestyle as you did in London. Even if you got £45k the rent is so much less in Newcastle than it is in London for exactly the same property. You may even have more disposable income than you did in London despite earning a lot less.

I wish you luck. Even if you can't find the job paying £60k/year take a job slightly under your skill set and work your way back up again.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

If you work in IT then you should have the ability to search for jobs online.

I would try cwjobs, jobserve or LinkedIn jobs.

It's also a bad time of year for job searching. Early next year when IT department budgets are finalised more jobs will become available.
  • Hi

    Thanks for your replies

I have checked total jobs and reed and cannot even see one job advertised for network engineer where in London there is in excess of 100 jobs

I know some businesses are looking for employees working from home only.

Is anyone here from newcastle? What is IT market like?

The job market up here is pretty slack - still very much in the recession. I personally wouldn't even look at your CV since you can't spell. Its not New castle or newcastle but Newcastle (and you can add upon-Tyne if that is where you mean as opposed to under-Lyme).

Well first of all look further than Newcastle.

Must be firms outside of Newcastle that are advertising.

You used other job websites other than those you mentioned ?
  • Thanks for pointing out the mistake, I am typing on the phone quickly so not grammer checking and do a quick spell check.

    It should convey my message.

Just starting to look but it feels dead

You need to be managerial grade to earn that kind of salary in IT up here. For example, Newcastle University were recently advertising for an Assistant Director of IT at that kind of salary level.
Its amazing how these banks can't even do simple calculations correctly..............

I'd have thought you would be knocking at least a third off that salary for the move from London to Newcastle, maybe more.

Rent / property prices should be a fraction of what you're currently paying though.

Bad time of year to be looking for work though - at least another month before it will start to pick up again.
