Chargeback possible over a paypal purchase?

Options
Hi all

I'm looking for some advice and hopefully reassurance!

I collect rare books and autographs and I recently used my Visa credit card to specifically buy a rather expensive book through Ebay and Paypal - my paypal account had zero pence in it when I made the purchase and therefore I used the card to specifically purchase this item, as I thought it might offer some extra protection.

Anyway, I got the book and it's damaged, there's a case open within paypal and it's being 'reviewed by a claims specialist'. My question is, if paypal fails me and doesn't find the case in my favour, will I be able to do a chargeback on this purchase? I am not willing to let someone just run off with a lump of my hard earned cash!

Thanks for reading.

Reportedly, it's possible, but Paypal don't like this and can close your account if they are over-furious.

No, S75 is known to fail and is automatically rejected because there is no direct relationship with you and the CC, you paid Paypal who hold your rights in their hands.

    What S75?
Neither OP nor I mentioned it...
  • Section 75, I was aware that those safeguards were gone, but I'm wondering if anyone had successfully charged back on Paypal regardless.

    From the Which website
    When can chargeback be used?

Chargeback can be used in cases of goods not arriving at all, goods that are damaged, goods that are different from the description, or where the merchant has ceased trading.:A

Make sure to open a Paypal dispute first.

All of which is irrelevant... the card wasn't used to pay for goods, it was used to pay PayPal to process a payment to a third party. This service has been delivered in full.

Most card issuers will not initiate chargebacks against PayPal for this reason, but some people claim to have had success. Wait to see what PayPal decide regarding the dispute, then if necessary try a chargeback.

I disagree unless the book was described as damaged.

of course they will :rotfl: what nonsense some spout on this site.
  • I have done some searching on other sites and there are some testimonies from people in the UK stating that they have clawed back their money from Paypal with chargebacks / reversals for damaged or faulty purchases. So if it comes to that, I'll do what it takes to ensure it. I don't have much faith in paypal! But maybe they'll come through in my favour...

And PayPal has this to say:
What do chargebacks mean for sellers?

A chargeback happens when a buyer asks their credit card issuer to reverse a transaction that has already cleared. This can mean that a payment you’ve received in your PayPal account could be reversed, even if you’ve already posted the goods – which can of course be frustrating.

PayPal will help you as much as possible if you wish to dispute a chargeback, but the final decision lies with the credit card company. However you can also get protection with PayPal's Seller Protection policy.
