Times + subscription cancellation

Options
I took out a times+ subscription a year ago mainly
For the reduced price Spotify subscription and the added bonus of the odd offer, freebie or something else as part of the subscription. I had no interest whatsoever in paying for news which is available online for free.

Fastforward to the end of November. My subscription was coming to an end and the Spotify was about to become chargeable at full rate. I emailed the contact email address found online requesting cancellation of my account and cancelled the PayPal authorised payment.

Received nothing until they sent me an email saying my payment had failed so I spoke to them on live chat. They informed me cancellation online or in writing is not possible and it has to be done over the phone

They confirmed my email had been sent to a correct email address however they only dealt with general enquiries or cancellation of accounts in the 14 day cooling off period so my email would have been IGNORED

They insisted it isn't a legal right to be able to cancel a contract in writing and that it had to be by phone and as such I had an outstanding payment on my account. I asked for an email address to complain to and was given one - 2 weeks later no response but another email asking for payment.

All my chats are visible on my account and my intent to cancel is visible on there system but I have to pick up a telephone and be bombarded with the "oh please stay a little longer" ploy and speak to someone on the phone.

So my account is cancelled and they still insist I owe a months subscription despite my cancellation been received in writing. If I wish to complain I could write and post a letter.

Which century do they operate in? I took out a wholly online subscription and I can't cancel electronically.

Can someone offer any advice as I'm sticking to my guns and they can shove the payment where the sun doesn't shine!!!!

What do their t&cs say about cancellation?
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

Someone else posted a similar issue with the times a while back. I believe it does say in the T's & C's that you can only cancel over the phone. You've obviously not read them.
  • Contact them on the phone. Details here

  • I signed up when they had a first month for £1 offer before and forgot to cancel until a couple of months later!
I prefer to do things online too, but they were very friendly and helpful when I phoned, I just said I can't afford it just now and the call was over pretty quickly without a lot of hard selling etc.
