Strange goings-on with Lloyds current account

Hi everyone, my Wife has just noticed that £140 has been deposited into her Lloyds current account with an entry next to it that starts 'PP' and loads of numbers after it. She's phoned Lloyds and the bloke she spoke to was about as useful as a chocolate fireguard! All he said was to wait to see if the amount will be reclaimed by the sender! Could it be a scam, or a genuine mistake?

Many thanks in advance :-)

PP = Payment Protection? Could it be a refund she asked for?

If she is certain the payment is not intended for her, she should ask Lloyds to remove the money from her account, in order to distance herself from what might be a payment from a fraudulent source. It's what I did when I received some unknown payments into a Nationwide current account.
  • Thanks, Archi. She hasn't put in for any PPI compensation for over a year, so I don't think it would be that. When she asked them to keep an eye on the payment, they said that there's nothing they can do! They said to just leave it in her account and they might claim it back.

That seems quite good advice to me.

The only time to get suspicious is; if a third party (not your bank) asks you to send back the monies.
If that happened I would advise them to use their bank to contact your bank to ask to remove.

    Could it be Paypal?
  • Could it be Paypal?

It could be - I checked my current account online (Santander) and it did indeed have a Paypal direct payment on there (which I actioned) and it did start with "PP"

I signed into my Wife's Paypal account, and there's been no transactions for the last month.........
  • Don't refund this sum without checking your balance on a different device (known man-in -browser scam).
  • It could also be Paddy Power. Is the money deposited directly or was it a debit card refund (you'll see CD and the last four digits of the card if it is a card transaction)? The bank should be able to tell you more about the nature of the payment if it's a card refund.
