Seeing how high these flood waters seem to be rising I find it hard to think any solution would be enough to stop flooding. Maybe we need to selectively abandon areas to new flood plains, allocating people new homes in higher areas?

One reporter talking about Selby got it right when talking about the Ouse breaching its banks when he said that the Ouse flood plain 'did its job' by taking the excess water so preventing Selby being flooded. Felt sorry for the farmer whose crops on the flood plain ended up under 5 feet of water though.

In other words leave the flood plains alone to do what they naturally got created for

For some it always comes back to blaming or praising EU regulations. I don't see other European Country's blaming EU regulations if there is flooding. Other country's blame THEIR politicians. The U.K. Government always (for the time being) can avoid a lot of the criticism as many of the voters (and non voters) wrongly blame Brussels.
There will be no Brexit dividend for Britain.

however, there is the question of why ever do we need an EU directives on how to manage flooding in the UK : it's not as if we can accidentally damage an EU neighbour.

I think the Irish might disagree with your views.

No, I've checked with my Irish relatives and they all blame the EU.
Some have gone as far as to suggest a German conspiracy but I think that is silly.
Too much sheep farming and not enough water meadows and trees.

Proudly voted remain. A global union of countries is the only way to commit global capital to the rule of law.
