O/S Daily Boxing Day Saturday 26 December 2015

This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!

As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or SLOW internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred. When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “hi everyone, hope everyone’s well” is fine

Morning everyone

Hugs to those that need/want them x

DH and I awake enjoying first peaceful cuppas of the day.

Still dark, wet underfoot and blustery again. It's been raining during the night but looks like it has stopped at the moment.

Had a lovely but quiet day yesterday. My parents were going to my elder sister's for the day, so visited our house on the way, they stayed for a while so boys could open their prezzies from them and show them what else they'd had from other people.

I was really pleased with the lunch - all the food seemed to cook really well, and we were eating at 1pm - we had a smoked salmon and prawn salad starter, then roast turkey with all the trimmings. I have 2 HM xmas puds that I make every year but we're always to full to manage any on xmas day after lunch. They become a dessert in the coming days - very often I'll do a lighter main and then xmas pud with custard/brandy sauce/cream.

My parents are visiting for lunch today. DH is going to collect them at 11am ish and they'll stay for lunch and then for however long they want into the evening. Mum's health is deteriorating and she definitely couldn't cope/manage with everyone at theirs' with all the work that goes with it. When we all get together we tend to do it at mum and dads as they have the biggest house and space for us all not too be falling over each other but between us we do all the cooking etc - I'm no. 3 of 4 children so when we all get together there's 17 of us - that's my immediate family. It looks like the away members of the family are coming up to mum and dads for NY - my niece is 18 on Jan 10 and so elder sister is having a get together at mum's on New Years Day lunch as it's the only time we can all get together. I'll speak to her within the next few days to see if she wants me to help out with desserts/or any other food. When we all get together we tend to share the food prep and cooking so mum doesn't have to get involved, although she comes in and out of the kitchen and likes to think she is "helping", so so difficult as she was such an intelligent, on the ball sort of person, she could juggle all the balls at once, iykwim, now she doesn't remember what we've been talking about within 2 minutes of the conversation, we just keep supporting them both, and dad especially as he finds it really hard.

Lunch here today will be gammon, LO turkey, prawns, smoked salmon, salad, pots, etc. Dad brought me a bag of apples that he'd been given yesterday, so I'm going to make an apple tart later, I have a choc gateau in the freezer, so they'll be dessert. Fridge seems still to be packed - normally I'd be thinking I need to go shopping but this year I'm going to be strict and really cut down on how much I spend on food and how much gets thrown away. I will need milk though within the next few days, I bought some on 23rd December and couldn't buy anymore as it wouldn't fit in the fridge, but there's nothing else we need.

Hope you all have a peaceful day x

Keep safe and well x

  • Good morning all and I hope you all have a lovely relaxing day today. I have had a cup of tea, the early morning cuppa is the best one of the day! Except for the unexpected one that your OH brings, that is a good one too.

I need to tidy a bit, my family like to have presents lying around and I don't but apart from that, nothing very pressing to do. I may have a leisurely bath instead if a fast shower, not very OS at all but it is a special day.

Family firmly glued to their pits until the mister gets up and makes his traditional boxing day breakfast.

Very windy here, and the rain woke me several times in the night, despite double glazing. But I still had the best night's sleep in weeks.

More tea now, and then a tidy up.
I was jumping to conclusions and one of them jumped back
  • Morning one and all. Hope everyone had a lovely Christmas Day - just been catching up on yesterday's posts. TOPSY and CSARINA my heart went out to the both of you. I don't understand what people get from throwing hurtful comments around, especially at Christmas when they hurt that much more.

We got so many presents between us it was unbelievable. They are all still piled up waiting for a home. I have my main present from DD on the go already - a Scentsy electric wax burner and an assortment of waxes. It scents the room beautifully.

Christmas lunch was cooked to perfection and enjoyed by all. Roxy dog came too and was given a treat of a bit of everything for her lunch and DS took home a big plate of leftovers to warm up for his supper! And I still have loads left in the fridge!

Today we are all at DD's for lunch - 6 adults and 5 children - so it will be a far more noisy affair than yesterday! I am cooking the meat here to take down - a turkey crown, a large gammon joint and a piece of beef. (Plus a large jug of gravy!) She has invited more people to join us for the evening but I honestly think by then Mr TA and I will have had enough and leave them to it!

Hope you all have a lovely day whatever you are up to and that you are having better weather too - it's bouncing down here and battering the front windows. (((HUGS)))) where wanted/needed and take care all xx

    Morning everyone.

Yesterday was a lovely day and rain free. I'm not sure what is happening outside today yet.

For bring 'stuck' st home I enjoyed my day. There was a small pile of presents to open and I was sent a photo of the other small pile waiting in Glasgow. To my delight the pressies were really thoughtful and practically perfect. I ate too much chocolate - that small tin of QS is just the right size to overeat - whilst enjoying Dr Who and Strictly. I had a FaceTime call with one of the Oz boys and phone calls / messages from the others.

Today I will tidy up the living room, vacuum the woodburner and go out for a walk. I also want to start planning a long road trip for next year, at least plan the plan by spending time looking at it on the web.

Cold venison for lunch today. :j

Anyway, happy Boxing Day to everyone.

    Morning All

Hope you had a lovely day yesterday, it was very quiet here at DDs with just the 3 of us but enjoyed it all the same. Went for a long walk into town which was good.

DS2 going to take DD into work in a while, I'll tidy up here and then we can go home, got DDs 2 south african friends arriving later this afternoon, and then another big dinner of roast beef.

Have a good Boxing Day whatever you are up to, take care. XX
  • Good morning all

I hope everyone had a lovely day yesterday, and I was thinking of those who had sadness in their life.

It was just 4 of us yesterday but we had a good time. We were totally spoilt with lots of presents and lunch was a success.

We have the other 2 grandchildren coming today so we are having a running buffet, so no proper cooking or set time. They can help themselves and pick and choose.

We will not be going near any sales

    Have a good day all

    Morning everyone,

Windy but dry here at the moment with the sun rising one side of the sky and the beautiful full moon setting the other.

Yesterday was reasonably quiet as just the three of us with OH and DM but we too had some lovely, thoughtful presents and ate/drunk too much. The two dogs enjoyed opening their new toys and treats, there is even a big bag of apples to go over to Billy this morning courtesy of his human Grandma :)

Today will be a reasonably quiet day, cold meat and bubble & squeak for lunch, my DM's favourite and then tomorrow we have a houseful when everyone descends for yet more food and drink.

Hugs to all and enjoy your Boxing Day xx

    Morning :santa2:

The last couple of days have been easier than I expected :D Scampi was a star with the visitors, I was armed with treats and bones and was prepared to take him out a few times but I didn't need any of it. Had a comedy moment when nephew was playing, he stepped back and fell on his bum into the large dog bed. He just sat there so Scampi picked up his rope, put it on nephew's lap, got in too and sat next to him :D

I had lots of chocolates, scented candles and toiletries, a few pairs of warm fluffy socks and a dressing gown which is very light but very warm and feels like velvet :D Also the new Terminator film, I'm looking forward to watching that this afternoon.

We lost a few roof tiles the other night, luckily we still have the ones we took off when we had the vent fitted on the roof for the bathroom extractor fan. Plus over the last few weeks, a thin crack has appeared along the top of the bedroom and bathroom wall. There's always been a small one in the bedroom - just the plaster - but it's grown lately. I think it's an easily solvable roof problem, everyone else has gone into panic mode and thinks it's the foundation along that side of the house, and obviously the side of the house is going to collapse at any moment :D:D Next door's house is a couple of feet lower than ours, they've had problems with the drain which runs under their side path so it's been dug out and repaired a couple of times. It might have caused our foundation to shift a bit along that wall, though there doesn't seem to be a crack on the outside wall, just inside. We've asked a couple of different people to come and look at it, they'll be able to tell us if we need a proper inspection or if it's one of those things that's blindingly obvious to a builder but not to us :D

Not much happening today. Miss tru has to work (retail at Christmas, boo!), master tru went to a friend's last night and reappeared at 6am this morning (sober!) so I expect he'll be in bed for most of the day. I usually tidy up the presents on first thing on Boxing Day but they've already been sorted and hidden away from Scampi. I'll run the dyson round, fill up the sweetie bowls, go out for a walk then spend the rest of the day doing nothing and munching on leftovers :D

  • Morning all

We had a very quiet day yesterday, once we had eaten a big breakfast hubby was given his 'Mum in a Million' rose bush he then retired to the study whilst I pottered around and then cooked a very late lunch, after we'd eaten he went back to his study & I read until 9 and then watched some TV.

Today hubby will plant up his rose bush & then we are visiting DD2 and taking gifts over at lunch time, we will only stay an hour I expect .

We have enough cooked meat, veg & salad to last a while, so no shopping for me for a while.

    Have a good day everyone.

    Hugs Hester
    Chin up, Titus out.

    Morning all,

    Happy Boxing day !

We had a lovely family day yesterday just the 6 of us but was a truly lovely day, dinner was just a little bit late but was really tasty and there are so many leftovers, plenty for today as well.

We are off to my sisters today so I shall take all the leftovers and warm them up, we can have cold meat and pickles to go with them, so a non cooking day today, tomorrow I have more family coming here about 10 in all I think, mum has promised to do everything but I cant see that happening, so I will be on the go again, I don't mind really its only once a year !!

I need to clear round this morning and find rooms for all the presents etc.

    Have good days all xx

Topsy how re you ? xx
  • Thank you for your kind thoughts and prayers yesterday.

We watched reruns of 'ello'ello we had recorded on Christmas Eve. Did not rush to get up. We were at my youngest daughters for lunch, grand daughter cooked, it was very nice, we had flaming christmas pudding.

We came home just as it was getting dark, lit the fire and settled down to watch TV. Just had cheese and biscuits for supper.

Today will be quiet, we are both very tired and it's beginning to show, I brought enough turkey etc home yesterday so I do not have to cook,
I will reheat it in the microwave. There is a joint of gammon to cook for tomorrow's supper.
