John Lewis - Never knowingly undersold

Options
The John Lewis website states: '.....
If we find a national high street competitor offering a better nationwide price for the same individual product, sold with the same service conditions, we'll lower our price to match in all our shops and on our website, including when a competitor is having a sale.

Some high street competitors have a different nationwide shop price to their online price; in that instance we'll match whichever is the lower of the two across our shops and on our website..'

Could members help me understand JL's policy as it operates on a day to day basis. Does that mean that if JL is offering a five year guarantee that the other retailer e.g. Currys, has to do likewise? If I see a product in say Curry's at a lower price and still want to buy from JL what do I need to do?

At the moment I'm looking at buying a new tv in the sales so will be checking across all the major sites with retail outlets. Finally does JL count Tesco Online as a purely online business?

Any other advice or hints from buying from johnlewis.com appreciated. I have no JL where I live.

  • As I've repeatedly said hand on heart and I don't say this lightly I believe that John Lewis's price match is a CON.

Oxford Street or Sloan Square (Peter Jones) are my local's so I don't do online. Not sure how the price match works online.... but my experience leads me to think its not something I'd like to try.
  • They price match with a high street retailer, not online.

I have had them price match several items, one with Argos, two with independent local sellers but not local to me. They don't have to be near you...just cheaper. You could be in Cornwall & the cheaper item in John O'Groats...as long as they'll deliver & have a high street shop then they should be considered by JL.

So if you want say an XYZ style TV which is £299 in JL but want it cheaper then you just search online for anyone in the UK that also sells the identical model TV but also has a high street shop. That can be anything from Argos who are almost everywhere to a local bloke with one shop in Glamorgan who also flogs his stuff online.

You have to email the request in with full details & the item MUST be identical.

Online sellers only do not count.

I've always got them to match first & then ordered from them.

    Hope this helps...

    Submit a price match request

These details will be used to help us process your request for matching another retailer's price for an item we sell, or one you've already purchased from us. To enable us to do this as quickly as possible, please ensure that the retailer you're reporting has a high-street shop, and is not online only. (we don't match online-only or mail order businesses such as Amazon, ASOS or AO.com)
You'll also need to take into account costs relating to:
    • Fitting and installation charges
    • Delivery charges
    • Warranty charges
If you've already purchased the item from johnlewis.com, please ensure that:
    • You have your order details to hand
    • You bought the item within the last 28 days
If you've purchased the item in one of our shops, please contact your nearest John Lewis to make your price match request

Avoid Currys at all cost, under ALL circumstances. Take it from someone that knows.

Another vote for avoiding Currys/PCWorld. Their "customer service" is beyond atrocious. I'd happily go with JL any day. Earlier in the year I bought a bunch of dresses online in the sale. Most of them didn't fit. I took them to the nearest store and got an instant refund, no questions asked. Last December I took a TV back to Currys as it stopped working. Took 6 weeks, 4 visits and a dozen phonecalls to get a refund (the TV was only 9 months old).

The only reason I mentioned Currys was because they are a major high street and Internet seller. I do appreciate their lack of customer service.

I understand the idea behind JL price match police (but I don't think it covers small independent retailers - does it?)

An area I'm not clear on is their guarantee. JL offer a five year guarantee on all their TV's but does that mean that if I see a TV on sale cheaper elsewhere that the other retailer will have to offer a five year guarantee before JL price match? Or is that their way out?

If you want 100% clarity, call JL and ask. Personally, I would think it bad press for them to use a guarantee period as a loophole and not JL style but if you hear it from the horses mouth, you'll know for sure.

From personal experience (on a much smaller non electrical item) they were fantastic with their price promise when I used it, no problems at all with the match.

    Yes, it does.

Yes, the retailer that you want to price match also has to offer a 5 year guarantee BUT most retailers I've seen do now offer 5 year TV guarantees.

Having a skim around I've noticed that JL are pretty much always the most expensive.... the advice I'd offer is do loads of research on the internet and be prepared for JL to do everything they can to wriggle out of a match but with some doggedness savings in the £100's over JL aren't unknown. I got £400 off my TV.

Research: that's what I'm at at the moment. Congrats on your £400.

I'm thinking of getting a Samsung Serif TV for the bedroom and notice that the medium one 32" is £799 at John Lewis. This is rather strange as if you go to the Heals shop they're doing it for £699 the same as Samsung.com I've not looked more deeply into this but wonder why JL is charging £100 more?

I got my Fridge Freezer from Currys and when it went off while still under guarantee to be fair to them they did come out. But it took about a month and then they went away to get the simple type of part you'd expect they to have on the van, then came back another month later, Meanwhile most of the food went in the bin.
Back to the John Lewis question, I've been looking for a washing machine and someone on Hukd said JL priced matched Currys for her even though Currys were only giving a 1 year guarantee and JL gave 2 years.
