It has been re-categorised into 'investing for the long term' (in realty it always was that anyway).

  • So the jump in the markets thar happens the majority of the time over December / latter 2 weeks is 'long term'? Not quite. Shame - I made quite a bit of cash this week from it :rotfl:

What are you on about? I thought the concept was simple enough, rally didn't happen (unless you are talking very small pennies). So I left the £70k that I recently invested with the rest of my more substantial equities investment (really, it wasn't rocket science, not to most anyway). My retirement plan is to have £1.5m in equities for dividend income anyway, so as I'm only half way there, it is necessary for me to invest further for the long term, so it isn't exactly as if I am changing my plan, I've just invested a bit more of my cash than I would have otherwise planned, but I'm pleased with the price that I am buying it at.

    That sounded muddled.
I made nearly a grand over a few days. Standard and predictable jump in markets at this time of year.
Of course those investing long term will feel the benefits when they come to take out their pension in x years.

No, you don't have to wait until x years! I'm feeling the benefit now with over a 4% yield, and less tax paid on dividend income than either employment or rental income.

I'm not interested in making a quick grand lol, in a few years I have to move over £1m from property equity into shares. I'll only take a short term profit if it is substantial, a 'grand' would be meaningless, and anyway I am already at the limit of my CGT allowance this year. The reason that I recently invested the extra £70k in was twofold:

    1. If the market fully recovered I might have taken it out again despite paying CGT.
    2. If it didn't recover (which it hasn't) I'm a small step nearer to getting the total amount in equities that I eventually want, at a decent low price. It still might recover of course, but if it doesn't it really doesn't matter.

Eyes down for a bumpy 2016. The only way is South.

Nice long additional investing period then, can't be bad. I must admit that I get quite greedy when prices fall.

  • This year's rally seems to be a bit muted compared to last year. After this year's volatility I'm basically where I was this time last year, although I have used the volatility to buy at a lower price which should hopefully boost the portfolio's value further down the line once things pick up again.

Despite having a fair amount already invested, I am much more worried that it recovers before I can further invest, rather than it doesn't recover at all. I won't be taking it out for at least 20 years anyway.
