Halfway through last year I was forcibly switched from hotmail to outlook. Hated it. Slow slow slow!

After some time, I discovered Outlook Light - a cut-down version that suits me fine and loads/runs much faster. Great. I got used to it.

Now suddenly when I open outlook I'm back to the ghastly, slow 'full' version with all the extra functions I don't want. And I can't seem to switch back!

Under 'options', 'general', there's a "use the light version" tick box, which also says "changes take effect next time you log in".

well, I've done all that - but still get logged into the full version. What's going on?

    Thanks.

But that is telling me to do exactly what I've been doing (as above).

For some reason, the tick box for the light version is not altering which version is loaded, whether ticked or unticked.......

I also found a suggestion on the web to clear cache and history. Tried that without success too.
  • Hmm, odd. Wish I could help :( Have you contacted their support?

I use Outlook.com all of the time and found that using Chrome browser rather than Internet Explorer is far faster.
Internet Explorer is very slow for me on many sites -
    I use Windows 7

    (sorry, but.....)

I use Firefox, but have tried IE too. No speed difference.

Firefox was fine when it was hotmail - it's outlook.com that's SOOooo slow. The 'light' version was fine too.... till it vanished.

I'm looking at gmail and others now, but after 15 years with a hotmail address I'm loathe to move.

Why not just install a decent email client and keep your hotmail account?

There are loads of decent, free, email programs out there, I'm sure you'd find one you like.

It's possible to use gmail to send/receive emails using your Hotmail address. As follows:

    1) Set up a gmail account

    2) To import your Hotmail and contacts, follow this: https://support.google.com/mail/answer/164640?hl=en

Gmail will automatically add a new "Sent Mail As" option with your Hotmail address.

So when you compose an email in Gmail, you can choose whether to send it as tea_and_cake@hotmail.com or tea_and_cake@gmail.com - or whatever your actual email addresses are.

    3) Tell Outlook to forward all your Hotnail messages to your new gmail address here:

    Options/Mail/Accounts/Forwarding/

Mozilla Thunderbird is easy to install and run.

No need. The alternative to either:

    A) forwarding emails from an existing account to Gmail OR
    B) using the Gmail service from scratch and ditching your existing email

is to use Gmail Mail Fetcher. In addition to checking for new emails in your other email accounts, this feature (based on POP3 protocol) will import all your historical emails from your other accounts aswell, useful if you want everything in one place. You can also send emails using your other email addresses from Gmail.
