O/S Daily Thursday 24 December 2015

This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!

As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or SLOW internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred. When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “hi everyone, hope everyone’s well” is fine

Morning everyone

Birthday wishes to those celebrating a birthday, hope you have a great day x

Hugs and get well wishes to those that want/need them.

DH up and gone to work early but not stupid early. DS1 & 2 still in their pits, don’t expect to see them much this morning, as I’ll be in and out getting on with chores and errands.

Still dark, dry but blustery – I could hear the wind howling round the house during the night.

Dinner last night was roast chicken pieces, roasties, LO cauli/broc cheese, peas. Yorkshires and gravy – not really what I wanted to serve so close to xmas dinner but I needed to cook something that I could put in the oven and leave – DS1 had asked if I’d take him into work yesterday morning, then when they finished work, several of them were going to the pub (they are told they will be finishing early but no exact time is given, basically the work has to be finished the bosses happy and then they’re allowed to go, they are now off until Mon 4 Jan – so they get a nice break – the bosses decided it was not worth trying to make the staff work over the xmas period as no-one really wants to be there and it’s a family run firm too, so as a gift they give them the time off!) I was waiting for a text to ask me to go and collect him – they finished work at 2pm and I went to collect him at 5.45pm – he’d had a few drinks, he soon tucked into his roast chicken etc!

I was reasonably productive yesterday once I finished work, I went straight to the cemetery to put a wreath on my Aunts grave. Then drove to MrL – and bought a few last minute bits, I wanted to some wine etc which I hadn’t bought and some bottled beer, and some perishables. It was busy but not horrendous. Then braved MrT’s later when I’d iced my xmas cake and realised I hadn’t got the frill for round the cake – it’s gone from my baking box – it must have been thrown away last year and I’d forgotten – couldn't get one anywhere so finished up in Dunelm buying ribbon, but it’s not wide enough and I’m not happy with it but it’ll have to do. Managed to buy the last couple of things I wanted – so just need to get wrapping now.

I’ll be going shortly to collect my meat hamper from the butchers, then I have a nail appointment at 8am – so want to be there on time otherwise she’ll be running late all day. Will then come home and crack on with everything that needs doing. I could do with do some loads of washing and drying too, so will potter along. DH should finish early but again don’t know what time.

Keep safe and well x

  • Good morning everyone, a wild and blowy night here in the Midlands. I have finished work until after New Year, and am going to enjoy my week and a bit of freedom.

Still coughing and sneezing fit to beat the band but feel ok and have lots to do today. OH did the last buts of shopping yesterday though I thought that was all done. He is the main shopper and I just get things I need. WRONG, he has suddenly appeared and needs to go out for some other things, well up to him, I am going nowhere today. It is a quarter past six, he never gets up at this time, has no need to unless I have asked him to drive me somewhere.

He has just asked if there is anything I want but how would I know, he did the shopping! So I have checked that he has bought himself some parsnips which I dislike and he has, so nothing that I know of.

I am off now to start being a busy little bee, hope you all have a good day, I will be back later when bored with domestic things.
I was jumping to conclusions and one of them jumped back

    Happy Christmas Eve everyone :santa2:

What a miserable morning here with rain lashing against the window and the wind howling but I am happy that Christmas is just around the corner. Poor hubby has just left for work but is hopeful of finishing early today. He was very peed off that the company he works for has given all the managers and inspectors bonuses and bottles of whisky etc but the workers haven't even had so much as a Christmas card . Way to go to motivate people! Anyway, he is refusing to let it sour his Christmas and will be looking forward to coming home early.

My eldest DD is borrowing the grandkids from their dad so we can play our traditional Christmas Eve game. It involves a pillow case of silly presents and a dice and is loads of fun. Once they have gone back to their dad's house me and the girls will be preparing all the veg for tomorrow and I will be cooking a gammon today as well. We are having cheese and crackers for tea today to use up some of the cheese mountain currently residing in the fridge.

I am very excited about Christmas this year, I thought it wouldn't be much fun as the girls are all teenagers but it is turning out to be as lovely as usual. I can't wait to see their faces tomorrow when they get their gifts. They don't have a clue what they are getting and I know they are going to be so happy. They are all still snoring their heads off at the moment, I think they will be up early tomorrow though :rotfl:.

I don't know if I will be on here tomorrow so I want to wish all of you a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I have loved being a part of this community this year sharing all your happy news and your sadness too. I hope 2016 brings you all you want for yourself and your families. Loads of love to you all xxxxxxxxx
  • Morning all. Once again been watching Masterchef on catch-up 'cos, as usual, I dozed off! It reminded me just how much I loved and miss our holidays in Italy - not that we ever ate 3 star!!!

My first job today is to make my Tuna Mousse. It wouldn't be Christmas if I didn't make that! I have been making it every Christmas since I acquired the recipe from a small Cornish hotel almost 30 years ago! We were so smitten with it that I cheekily asked if they could give me the recipe!

It's been tradition for many years to meet Mr TA's DB and SIL every Christmas Eve for an afternoon drink or two. Not sure about today though, it will depend how Mr TA feels so I will leave it entirely up to him. I'm not bothered anyway, I'd be happy just to get my feet up and relax once the last minute jobs have been done.

I need to make room in the fridge now to leave tomorrow's meat slowly defrosting. There will just be us, DS and his DP, so just doing beef and an orange glazed gammon. (I will be doing turkey Boxing Day to take down to DD's, with another piece of beef and another gammon joint when there will be 11 of us to feed!!)

Have a wonderful Christmas everybody and I hope the poorlies are feeling better and can enjoy it. I shall be thinking of CSARINA and FLOSS too as I know you won't be feeling at all festive. It's the worst time to lose a loved one - not that there is ever a good time. Take care all ((((((HUGS))))) where needed and wanted. I'll check in later to catch up on news xxx

    Morning everyone.

The storm raged and howled all night, rain bouncing off windows and squalls of gales whisking everything around. Plans to travel down to Glasgow are on hold so it may have to be a New Year visit instead.

Yesterday I only bought a packet of nails and a mat for the hall. Then I hung the new squirrel feeder onto the tree. Didn't go out after that as I may have been found floating in the sea. Oh, I got my return parcel off too. Some friends called round to exchange presents so we had a lovely hour together until their little boy got bored.

I'll have defrost some meat for tomorrow now. And I'll have to risk a quick trip into town for cream and a bit of wine!

Now I wish you all a not too frantic Christmas Eve and a very peaceful Christmas Day.

    Morning All

The weather last night was fierce, all seems to be calm now. Took some friends to the airport around 7pm and not surprisingly their flight was delayed.

Just need to pop out to get some 'cheese with fruit in' for DS2 - he lives in The Netherlands and says he can't get decent cheese! I think he ate most of the Lancashire I bought at Bury market. Apart from that I've nothing to get.

Going over to DDs later to stay till Boxing Day so need to pack some sort of bag - I'm thinking pjs, onesie and slippers!

Thinking of those not feeling like celebrating, hope everyone has a peaceful, safe and restful Christmas. Much love and take care. XX

Christmas Greetings to you all

Crickey we have been productive getting in here early a few of you have beaten me to it. Well Madge cat decided that she wanted the house to be up at 6.45am this morning, yowling as she was at the bottom of stairs - she beat the alarm clock by about ten minutes!

I am off to the hairdressers this morning and then back home. Just need to get the dogs walked and then get changed. There is a small amount of housework to be done but that is it! M&S start their online sale today at midday so I shall have a nosey in and see what is on offer - never buy anything, but I just like to have a rummage around online from the comfort of the office chair :D
Cat, Dogs and the Horses are our fag and beer money :D
  • :xmastree::xmastree:Good mornng, a very happy Christmas to you all

It has been a very windy night here, but it isn't raining.

Everything is bought now, I am not going out today. The house is clean but will give it the once over. The gammon and beef are cooked just the turkey crown to do tomorrow.

DGD1 is at work today but hopes to finish at lunchtime, so looking forward to having her with us all over Christmas.

Thank you all for your friendship over the last year, I love to hear all your news, good and bad.

Thank you Tru for the carols, and yes today's is my favourite as well. It is something to look forward to each morning.

To those who are not well or have lost loved ones, I am thinking of you and send you healing vibes.

    Much love to you all

    Morning everyone,

Well it's dry here at the moment but the wind has been blowing all night rattling the windows, kept waking up with the moon shining in the windows.

Managed to get most of my jobs done yesterday, the farm shop was busy but everyone was in a jolly mood so no jostling and pushing, very amiable.
This morning am off to the yard to see my boy and all the livery owners are having a little get together in the cafe, they are such a friendly bunch and we have all supported each other through tough times so should be nice.
My DOH is going to pick up my Mum and bring her home to us, then we are off out to a late lunch at a local pub which am really looking forward to.

Will pop back in later to catch up on the day's news but must take this opportunity to wish everyone a peaceful Christmas, I have been made to feel so welcome by folks on this thread, it's a lovely little community. Big thank you to Tru for the lovely carols.

    Take care all xxx
  • Quickly popping back on to see what TRU's Carol For The Day is! I have been racking my brains trying to think which carols we haven't had yet this advent! Thank you TRU!

BTW the wind is still howling here too and rain bashing against the windows. According to the forecast we are going to be stuck with it most of the day.The binmen have just been so we won't have rubbish blowing around today at least! xxx
