Payment not charged - how long to leave in budget?

Back in October I put £15 worth of fuel in my car at a Shell petrol station on a motorway services. My debit card still hasn't been charged. I am assuming that the payment was authorised but I don't have the receipt any more and wouldn't have thought to check it before shredding shortly afterwards.

I have this amount in my budget on YNAB - every time I reconcile my account it moves me to the last uncleared transaction which is that one so I can't forget about it!

Am I right in thinking that they have up to 6 months to charge my card or am I making that up?

You are right. They can take it even after 6 months, but in this case it would be a case for chargeback as for unauthorised transaction.

There is a time limit defined by Visa & MasterCard for taking card payments, but you will still owe the money and Shell are entitled to recover it for up to 6 years.

I made a debit card transaction in April that has never been presented, I finally removed it from my MS Money records a couple of weeks ago so it doesn't pop up as an unreconciled item any more. If the company does take it without warning I'll ask my bank to refund it then tell the company to re-invoice me so that I can pay at my convenience.
