Road Tax???

On purchasing a second hand car recently with the new rules I can not believe the con being pulled in front of the already taxed to ceiling motorist. It seems that each time a vehicle changes owners with these new rules the new owner must purchase tax from the day of the month so as before you loose the amount of days into said month anyway.
As the above has generally been regarded as just the way it is and always has been therefore acceptable I think the DVLA are now attempting bare cheek. The previous owner only receives a tax refund of the full months left!!! If I am seeing this correctly at any given change of ownership the DVLA are managing to have 2 months of tax for the same vehicle therefore gaining a substantial amount of income throw technicalities devised by themselves.... What is going on in this so called great country of ours, seems that from all angles the people of this country are told pay what you are told to pay or suffer.....little secret that the departments from above should maybe think about. What makes this country is not a bunch of adults acting as children shouting insults at each other from different sides of a room. The ordinary people who work in all industries, commercial services for imported / exported produce ect make this country tick along so to practically force extra revenue in this manner is in my opinion completely wrong to say the least...

Buy/sell cars with £0 VED, problem solved.0

You have posted in the insurance section of the board.
Ask a board guide to move this to the motoring forum (or the praise/vent/warning section If you just wanted to have a rant!)0 -
As the seller u can not sit it with no road tax, basically if you sell it on say 15th of month you get a refund of whole months left.....As the buyer you need to tax it straight away, which being the 15th means the new tax covers from beginning of the month. Tax paid twice over no matter which way you look at it!!!0

Where have you been for the last year? THis is old news!
To be fair to the government, at the same time, they reduced the premium for buying 6 months tax from 10% to 5%, and introduced a scheme to allow monthly payments.0 -
Odd that i changed cars earlier this year and didnt lose anything on my old tax or have to pay anything extra on the new one. Change cars on the last/first day of the month and your sorted.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0

The system has always been like this its just not many people would get a refund on the vehicle tax before they sold the car. Under the new system you can't really allow people to sell the car with existing tax because people won't bother checking and will just take the sellers word for it that it's taxed. Considering people don't usually change cars very often I think paying an extra £15 odd isn't really that bad. Plus spending money to change a system so they receive less tax is not really a sensible thing to do in a time of government budget cuts!
You say that motorists are "taxed to ceiling" but owning and running a car has never been cheaper!.0 -
I'm with the OP. The fact that it's only a few quid is not the point, it's the principle.
When a car is bought/sold both buyer and seller will have to pay tax for that month. All those few quids here and there very quickly add up.0 -
