NCD taken away.

Hi there,
I recently for family reasons changed my citroen car / derived van for a Ford Focus 5 door hatchback, my insurance company flatly refused to use my 6 years no claims. The latter 2 years earned with them with the same underwriter which I now find actually is a part of there company ie 'owned by themselves'. After some rather heated discussions I ended up telling them that I would not be using there service again so searched the comparison sites finally resting on an alternative insurance provider.
Only after the 2 weeks cancellation time period, deposit and 1st monthly instalment were made the company sent a letter asking for proof of NCD. At this point is the first knowledge I had that the apparent alternative is also owned by the previous insurer and has the same underwriter. Even though as stated the previous 2 years no claims were with the parent insurer they to said I would have to build my no claims back up from nil. Do not proclaim to no the in's and out's concerning NCD but can not find a plausible reason for not obliging the years earned because this acts as a record of safety which the insurance company should use for the risk assessment?
As long as it has 4 wheels and combustion engine what is the difference. If anything the van was used on the road a lot more and in industrial areas of greater risk of accident damage. If what they have done is allowed legally then something needs doing. To stay insured has cost me an additional £195 along with the additional extra cost for the next 5 years whilst having to rebuild my full no claims back. If the rate remains the same I estimated over the next 4 premiums inc this year I will be paying around £600 extra. Is there anything I could do to get this sorted???

Berlingo van?. The Berlingo multispace is a van derived car. I don't think car insurers recognise van insurance. No idea why.

    Not with your present insurer.

See if a local broker (not Swinton) can help in any way - if not with an insurer prepared to accept your van NCD maybe one that will give an introductory discount to reflect your claim free history.

(Though check the full cost of cancelling your current policy before going elsewhere to make sure a switch is cost effective)
  • I'd say the best option here is to ring insurers rather than go on comparison sites as the small print about whether or not they will accept van no claims won't be shown. Some car insurance companies accept this, others don't often it depends on the use of the van (business or pleasure.)
