iPad stolen from repair shop

Hi
I hope someone can help me.
On 2nd December I dropped my iPad into a local repair shop as it would not charge. they said they would have a look at it and ring me when they knew what was wrong with it. They gave me a receipt as I paid a £10 deposit.
2 weeks later I managed to get hold of someone at the shop to find out what was going on. I was told that my iPad had been stolen (along with lots of other items) from a different premises where it had been taken to be fixed. The man gave me a reference number for the police said that 3 people had been arrested and they had had no way of contacting me as my phone number was on a sticker on the stolen iPad.i asked what they would be doing to replace the stolen item and they were not forthcoming at all, saying it was in the hands of the police.
I then phoned the police who told me that nobody has in fact been arrested and that they are still investigating the crime and will call me back if they get anymore information. I checked Find my iPad and it isn't showing presumably because it is not charged. I am also concerned that there was a sticker on it with my name and telephone number.
Obviously I am gutted at the loss of my iPad, even more so at the attitude of the shop. Do the shop have to reimburse me under their insurance? Their attitude was dismissive when I spoke to them (I checked with my home insurance and I have a £250 excess so it isn't worth claiming on it)
Many thanks for any advice.

Send them a letter before action, they are responsible for the Ipad whilst in there care.0

Definitely keep the pressure on the repair shop otherwise they may be tempted to let it ride. They should be claiming off their insurance for your IPad AND the other items.0

Thank you both.
Any suggestions as to what the letter should say?
Is there something I could quote?
Thanks

Theft from their premises is their problem, not yours. Don't be misled that it's up to you to resolve or by any police red herrings.0

Just a quick update.
Letter sent off stating as above on 4th January giving them 14 days to reimburse me.
I received a phone call from the shop yesterday regarding my letter, they said that in the interests of customer service they are prepared to offer me "one of their iPads" which I refused and referred them back to the letter. The chap kept arguing and saying that they only have to replace like for like, then asked why I didn't want one of their iPads, to which I replied I preferred to buy my own with a guarantee and warranty. He kept going on saying they didn't have to reimburse me, but I stood my ground, referred him back to my letter and ended the call.

Then you will lose. He has offered a like for like replacement, he isn't required to put you
in a better situation.0 -
Out of interest how old was your ipad?
Why do you think you're entitled to a brand new one with a warranty etc?0
