Can you have a Paypal a/c without giving debit card details?

I'm applying for a Paypal account which I only want to fund by direct debit but I can't get past the page requesting the numbers from your debit card, which simply aren't required for DDs. Is there a way around this, and what would be the earliest date I could set up a DD from my Club Lloyds a/c to fund it?

You are required to provide either a debit card or credit card to support and backup your paypal account.
If the application process requires a debit card, just do it. After setup, go into account maintenance and add a credit card and delete the debit card.
    HTH.

Is that because a credit card is perceived as less of a risk than a debit card ?

No, it's because you asked for a way around giving your debit card details.

    WHAT???

What I thought I had written was

"But your suggestion won't help OP, who, I think, is trying to set up DDs in a hurry in order to meet the T&Cs of a current account."

    I wouldn't mind, but I haven't had a drop of alcohol - not even a chocolate liqueur - for well over a week:eek:

Yep I'm in a hurry, but don't see why I should give up the 3 digits on the back of my card to Paypal.

Given I said of the proposed Paypal account 'I only want to fund by direct debit', I'd have thought it obvious that I didn't want to reveal any card details.

Your card is used as part of Paypal verifying your ID.

You wouldn't want anyone who has your name, address and bank details to be able to open a Paypal account in your name and to set up a DD against your current account, would you?

The whole point of using paypal is so you don't reveal card details to anyone, If you are that paranoid about security, Then use cash money and go to real shops.

Details are encrypted so it's highly unlikely anything would happen, Not forgetting that anyone could setup a direct debit using you're sort code and account number and still take funds our you're account. So you think you are safe but in reality you are still in the same position.
