    True you have no reason to bleed brakes if just changing pads.

    I was taught to take the top off the reservoir when pushing back the piston to make it easier to push the piston back.

    Undoing the bleed nipple would also allow easier pushing back of the piston.
  • The reservoir could also have been topped up as the brakes wore down so may have too much fluid in it once the pistons are pushed back in.

    Any excess would come out the nipple too tho.

    Pushing the pistons back and forcing a lot of fluid back up to the resevoir
    can sometimes cause issues for the ABS seals.

    Also the seals work one way, so pushing then in can actually bring some air in with it. I always clamp the pipe and undo the bleed nipple to expel the extra fluid and then give them a quick bleed also.
