Penalty clauses are rarely enforceable - so I wouldn't worry about court.

If you get papers, post on here and get advice
Quite correct. Take a look at the Unfair Terms in Consumer Contracts Regulations 1999 and the associated guidelines. They can basically only charge you for any actual and quantifiable losses they make. They cannot just think of a number and charge you a penalty.

Many people seem to think that if they cancel something they automatically lose their deposit too. How wrong they are in many cases.

    £100 per month? Who's the instructor Mr.Miyagi?

Mr. Miyagi did it for free and also included a nice car :D

post_old.gif readin about your troubles make my worries a laugh. I hope you overcome this nonsense.

I wanted to get my son into a martial arts class, but they want a lumpsum of £150 intially which covers license (for a 4yr old)+insurance+kit, and not including fees.

Then 3 times a year they want me to fork out an extra £23 for a new belt.

the only thing they have kept reasonable is the class fee which is £35 a month.
  • adamnsu - that's fairly normal, for the grading it isn't just the belt - it's all the associated paperwork too.

What do you think about about initial lumpsump of £150 they expect people to pay?
