shopmagenta.com

Has anybody tried to buy anything from shopmagenta.com recently? I bought something from the site 2 weeks ago and the wrong item was delivered. I started to go through the returns procedure but suddenly everything stopped. The website is down and the phone number is blocked. I have an awful feeling that they have ended trading. Help!

• Hi,

I had a similar problem - I've bought something and nothing arrived. Not only have thier main website stop working, the associated webccp.co.uk payments vehicle has also stopped.

• I have had similar issues with Shopmagenta - early August bought Graphics card which is incorrect for my PC, misleading info on their site . Started returns procedure , received stupid questions they kept putting obstacles in my way, and then everything stopped - web site not available, no reply and emails ignored - fear the worst - getting onto Credit Card company today . Its the first time this has happened

Great! Now I'll never get a refund for the defective item they sent me.

If you paid my Credit Card and amount was over £100, its worth getting in touch with card issuer, as under Sec 75 Consumer Credit Act - there is Equal Liability, of cause it all depends on circumstances of your case, how old product is etc - but worth a try. I have contacted the local Trading Standards for area where company trades from and they have had a number of complaints and are investigating, and advised me to contact my card issuer which I have done and sent letter to them requesting 'freezing of payment' - lets hope they refund money.

They are still listed as 'safebuy approved':

Which in theory has an arbitration service. However it also lists them as continuously monitored which considering the site has been down for days doesn't say much for their monitoring.

I ordered ram from them just before they disappeared. So far I've not received it, but neither has my credit card been charged. I've been unable to cancel the order so I'm hoping I've had a lucky escape.

Anyone know what has actually happened to them
• I ordered a flat screen from them mid-August. I got a reply confirming receipt of the order on 17 August, and since then nothing.

I contacted another company on the same trading estate who said they had moved to Pocklington (a few miles away), but had no further details. The company that manages the trading estate had already told me that the company had terminated the lease as they were moving. At first, I assumed that this meant that they were having problems due to the move, but as everyone else has found, the non-response has gone on too long for this to be the explanation.

I have asked the local police if they know anything, and am waiting for a call back.

Can ianws post the contact details for the Trading Standards people he dealt with? If a number of us complain, maybe it will carry more weight?

• A bit more information.
From http://www.checksure.biz/ [I cannot swear to its accuracy]:

Shopmagenta.com is run by Magenta Solutions Limited, the managing director is Rory David Fidler born 1969. His address is Thornton Close, Market Weighton.

Companies house has not (yet) listed any change of registered address.

The London Gazette does not show any winding-up or administration order against the company.

A google for "Rory Fidler" gives his mobile number on 4/4/2005 as: 07976 366606. I have not tried this number. [If you try it and it works please be polite, that way you are more likely to get results].

whois -h whois.tucows.com shopmagenta.com gives:
Registrant:
Online Magic Ltd
5 Kew Road
Richmond, Surrey TW92PR
UK

Domain name: SHOPMAGENTA.COM

(Magenta Solutions Ltd was previously called Online Magic Ltd).

There is an unlimited company of the same name called 'Magenta Solutions' it is registered at Parkshot House, 5 Kew Road, Richmond, Surrey TW9 2PR.
(Parkshot house seems to contain a number of unrelated small companies). On contacting 02083348014 the person on the end of the line said that Magenta Solutions had moved out and they had no contact number for them.

Hope this helps.
• I bought a transfer unit for an epson printer was not the right item sent back to magenta no refund company not accepting calls no website, i did also order a new printer fortunally i got that, but i am £175.32 out of pocket i feel extremly let down not sure there is a lot we can do. (watchdog may be an option if there is enough people)

I also contacted a local company next door they said there was hundred of items being delivered nobody to accept them. The contact of the local police is a good option at the end of the day it is theft i wonder how many people have lost out from this rogue

Interesting. Number one on the list of '5 leading reasons to buy from a SafeBuy member' is '... benefits such as a 14 day 'cooling off' period (where possible)'. Certainly doesn't jibe with Magenta's insistence on a 7-day returns policy regardless.

Anyway, SafeBuy responded promptly to an enquiry today: they have been looking into it, and have now withdrawn approval, and have advised the payment service provider not to release funds to Magenta.

Thanks to the person who pointed out the possibility of claiming back from the credit card company. (In my case, the purchase was below £100.)
