So what about 'french doors'? Mine point south so get the sun on them. The whole point is they open into the garden, you wouldn't want a porch on them. Unless you mean one of John Stalker's retractable canopies!

You hit on the point to an extent -with hot climates you would see a canopy detail, be it fixed or retractable - here think of the awnings on shops that were common everywhere 150 years ago,

Look at many 1930s houses and you will see the front door is located within an open porch. This has been replicated there after on many house styles by modern developers.

Countless homes have cantilever or gallows bracket porches - this is a real porch not the faux detail that people build onto houses and then mount a door on the outside.

For centuries back doors used to be sheltered by overhangs, coal houses, privvies and the like - there was a reason for this.

Nah, I'm good! I'm not that desperate for something to do... :rotfl:

Let's restrict this to the UK

I have a south facing front door - double glazed UPVC - 17 years old and never had a problem. I've seen some go yellow and I presume that is down to quality.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill
  • How about a car port, protect the car, and solve the problem.

Look at Wickes composite doors, they seem OK in full sun. Son has one three years old and no problems.

Think all door expand slightly in the heat . esp direct sunlight for long periods . Better quality doors with thicker gauged profiles expand slightly less but their locking systems leave very little to adjust when this happens but all uPVC and composite doors can be adjusted slightly. Light or white less than dark colours but that makes sense anyway . A porch or canopy could help shade it .
 hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world
